Why do they have to start negoiating with the Greens??
There's only 1 Green in the House of Representatives that Gillard can negoiate with, but there are 4 independants...

Brandt isn't likely to hold the balance of power there...

Hello!? Governance of Oz is not confined to the Lower House - hence the LibLabs have Senators in their ministries...

Hint: what is the point, in a Govt passing legislation in the Lower House without consulting along the way with the Senators who hold the balance or power in the Senate and therefore have the right, responsibility and duty to review and pass or amend same!?

I know.....But my point is the Greens don't have balance in the House of Reps...

And 9 Greens out 76 in the Senate doesn't necessarily mean they will there either....

12 out of 15 seats in WA are Coalition, for a start....

I haven't seen the 'final' Senate make up yet, but it's looking fairly Lib/nat heavy...

I've posted the results here - and the Greens will firmly hold the balance of power in the Senate: -

http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1282349015

http://www.ozpolitic.com/yabbfiles/Attachments/ABC_Senate_results_snapshot_11_30...

Hmm based on that, yes it does look like it...
However, referring to the other list you posted...the AEC have only counted 'almost' 75% of the votes though...

Although it probably won't change ALL that much...
There's only 1 seat uncounted..

I don't think that the "other" is not "uncounted" - that would be the surprise DLP Senator...

The Senate works on a quota system - so its outcome can be determined more readily and it doesn't really boil down to postal/absentee votes...

Basically, once a Senate candidate receives enough votes for a quota they are elected...

It is not as simple as that, but that's essentially how it works...

the Greens are a protest vote party. no one actually votes for green policies (other than a small minority of crazies). the Greens are the anti-labor/liberal party and nothing more.

Yes people vote for the Australian Greens, as they want a change from Labor (Tweedledee )  and liberals (Tweedledum ) .

If the Greens hold balance of power, that is a good thing, especially if the Libtards scrape in.

Yes I can just see it.  If the Liberals form government, (and I don't think they will) they will have to very seriously negotiate with the greens.  They probably wont like it though,  as their born to rule mentality will be tested very much, now that the greens have the senate.

The greens had the senate BEFORE, you twit. if libs opposed a measure labor HAD to get the Greens support or it failed. nothing has really changed at all. their numbers are bigger but the effective power is identical.

Unfortunately as the situation appears, they will have the power to block any reform from whichever major party forms government and will do so.    If the pundits are correct about a second wave of GFC this will place Australia in a very vulnerable position as the governing party will have to succumb to the Greens wishes, which are often unrealistic) to get anything through.     Whilst my loyalties lie with the conservative side of politics,  I'm hoping Labor will get this mess to try to sort out,  and hopefully it will teach the electorate to be more careful about their votes.   It could very well be that the whole thing will fall apart irrespective of who gains the top job, and we will be back to the polls within a year.  I don't envy either Gillard or Abbott in this situation.

The electorate said the two major parties are not good enough. The electorate has had their say.
What more proof do you need?

There are two 'growing' parties on the scene now, Greens and Informal.

There was no mistake at the polling booths. The people have spoken. They have voted for a hung parliament. That's democracy.

I think Julia realises that people are not happy with how politics is done.

Abbott still doesn't get it, he still thinks people want him.

Extremeist nutbags, like one nation and the greens don't last very long once they are put on the spot of having to perform in parliment.

Up until now they have been nothing more than over paid seat fillers, never having to produce and cost any sort of valid policy.

Disaffected labor voters who turned to the greens will become disaffected greens voters soon enough.  Grin

I believe John Howard stole a few of his policies from one nation. Extremist nutbag indeed.

FFS, Bates, this wasn't even true of the LibLab leaders in their own electorates!

Hint, according to the latest figures from the ABC's Australia Votes site: -

* Abbott won a total of 42,053 or only 59.3% of first preference votes and a TPP swing to the Libs of only 4.6% to 63.4% (as at Sun, 22 Aug 2010 15:45:38)

(Curiously, in his own seat the Greens received a massive 15.7% of the primary)

* Gillard won a total of 56,736 or 64.4% of first preference votes and a TPP swing to the Labs of 6.6% to 72.1% (as at Sun, 22 Aug 2010 15:45:39)

(In Gillard's seat, the Greens received 6.7% of the primary)
