Dollar slumps to 3-week lows after disappointing jobs data

The dollar slumped versus major rivals Friday, with the euro rising to its highest level versus the U.S. currency in three weeks after official U.S. data showed the rate of jobs growth decelerated last month to its slowest level since late 2010.

More negative news for the dollar followed when the Institute for Supply Management’s services index came in at 52.9% in May, down from 55.7% in April, driving the dollar even lower.

Labor Department data showed the U.S. economy added just 38,000 jobs last month, the slowest pace of growth since September 2010. The number was far short of the 155,000 jobs economists polled by MarketWatch had expected.

Lee Ferridge, head of macro strategy at State Street Global Markets, said
the May report helped cement a trend of slowing jobs growth. Readings from the past two months were revised lower by a net 59,000—bringing the three-month average to 116,000, its lowest level since June 2012.

“The thing with this payrolls report was it’s not as if this is an anomaly with other data firing on all cylinders. It’s not. The data in the U.S. has been generally lackluster,” Ferridge said.

Last month, Fed officials, including Chairwoman Janet Yellen, warned investors that rates could rise as soon as June, provided economic data remained robust. Minutes from the Fed’s April policy meeting showed a majority on the Fed’s rate-setting committee would support a hike in June, sparking a massive repricing of the likelihood of a summer rate increase in the federal-funds futures market, a popular market-based gauge of investor expectations for the pace of rising rates.

Now, a June hike is likely off the table, Ferridge said, while a hike in July looks increasingly unlikely. The market is pricing in a 4% probability of a rate increase at the Fed’s June 14-15 meeting, down from about 21% on Thursday, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool. The chance of a rate increase in July is 36% from 49% yesterday.

“Unless you see a significant pickup in the June payrolls number, I don’t think I can see how they could go in July,” Ferridge said.

Demographics have the US jobs market, would be standing STILL, at an increase of 170,000 jobs per month, anything less is regressive!

In any event, it seems the MONEY MARKET "have seen the light" and it is now strongly suggesting there will be NOT INTEREST RATE INCREASES, for some time, as the US$ dropped 2 full cents, over the last week & around 1.6 cents just yesterday.

http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/index/dxy

Oh & yes, all that activity did affect the OZ$, which jumped from around 72.20, to 73.66 against the US$. yesterday.

Well much of Europe finished Down between 2-3% & the US was Down by 120 points (0.67%).

The OZ market is closed today, But Futures are pointing to a Down day here tomorrow.

However, what actually happens in OZ tomorrow, will largely reflect what happens in the US & Europe overnight & those Futures markets are also pointing Down, for tonight.

Why This Time Is Completely, Utterly, Totally Different... Like The Difference Between A Hurricane And An Ice Age

A destructive storm like a hurricane can do significant short-term damage and leave long-term issues to be resolved. But when it is done and over, life generally returns to "normal." However, what we are facing economically, financially, societally is not a storm but instead more akin to an ice age. The changes taking place and culminating now have been millennium in the making and will be many decades more before some new "norm" is established.

Why is this important?
The long period of population growth, and specifically of the growth of the core 15-64yr/old population among these nations, which has driven economic activity for millennia and certainly since WWII has come to an end. But not only come to an end but is about to start shrinking significantly. The implications of a pie no longer growing but moving to outright shrinkage will change everything.

To explain why this time truly is different (and why new, entirely different thinking & solutions are necessary), I'm going to use oil consumption as a proxy for general global consumption. Oil consumption is broken down among four groups:

1) The wealthy 34 OECD members (membership HERE)
2) China, Russia, Brazil
3) India, Africa
4) Rest of World

Outlined below are the groupings' 2013 population (% of global total) vs. changing oil consumption. The OECD nations with 17% of global population consume 50% of the oil. China, Russia, Brazil combined are 24% of global population and consume 19% of the oil. India and Africa are 33% of the population and consume 8% of the oil. A growing India and Africa simply haven't the income, savings, access to or utilization of credit to allow their growth to offset the loss of the growth among the OECD, China, Russia, & Brazil.

This is simple arithmetic of adding how many are moving into the core on one side minus how many are exiting on the other. The baby boom was a global phenomenon as is the global baby bust. WWII's destruction and its aftermath of cheap energy collectively brought all these nations onto a shared cycle unlike ever before.

Conclusion:
An economic and financial system premised on growth over sustainability may not have been wise. And for all the Fed's intelligence and intellectual firepower, the Federal Reserve seems to be entirely lacking when it comes to wisdom. It certainly pulled forward decades of consumption with huge advancements made that would not have otherwise come to be.

However, the bill was always going to come and it was simply awaiting the trigger mechanism. Decelerating and outright population declines in many locations were that trigger.

I have made every effort to outline the change and unfortunately, that is the easy part. The hard part is the courage and cohesion to outline a course of corrections and adjustments which allow for a war-free transition from this flawed non-market based (centrally planned economy) to a true free market.

If we will not acknowledge and face the flaws of our current system (with its clear minority of winners and majority of losers), allow an orderly wind-down of debts and the flip-side obligations that cannot be paid... then we are almost sure to end in conflicts (internal and/or external) of which the possible outcomes are truly awful. We still have a chance to do the right thing as hard and painful as the adjustments will be... or a chance to do nothing with almost sure terrible consequence.

Well, Well, Well???

It seems the the DOW & much of Europe were heading for "another Day of Declines", But "SOMETHING" spurred a recovery!
The DOW was down over 160 points, but finished up 93.

Nothing much, in the way of positive Economic news!
The only "exception to the norm" being a British MP got killed, campaigning on the Brexit vote got suspended and suggestions arose that the NO VOTE on Brexit may now have a better chance?

Go Figure?

Wall Street has been rocked by an $8 billion hedge fund's implosion

Visium Asset Management, a multibillion-dollar hedge fund, has imploded in the biggest scandal to hit the industry in years.

The fund told investors of its plan to close in a letter Friday. It's the most high-profile shutdown since authorities forced Steve Cohen's controversial SAC Capital to close in 2013.

A slew of factors — from a brewing insider-trading scandal to a contentious investment by Visium's founder that rankled investors and staffers alike — led to Visium's demise.

Just days before Visium announced the shut down, one of its top portfolio managers — Sanjay Valvani — was charged with wire and securities fraud.

Two other former Visium portfolio managers, Christopher Plaford and Stefan Lumiere, were accused of purposefully miscalculating the price of securities so that they could charge investors inflated fees and mislead them about the fund's liquidity.

==================================
The story reminds me "a little" of the ethics of the Banking industry, who  are still charging 20% + on some Credit Cards, But the Politicians still rarely, if ever, mention it!

It is said, "you can't fight the FedRes"!
Well, there is also a combination, against which even the FedRes can not win!

That combination being -
1) Demographics - where the Global Population is Aging & where Growth is slowing, just prior to going into actual Decline.
2) Energy - Where Growth in Demand is Slowing, Growth in Supply is also slowing & Pricing is Down, in tune to both Demand & Supply.
3) Climate Change - which is changing & affecting Agriculture & Water Supply, in different ways,in different places.
4) Debt - which is off & racing higher Globally, following the Japanese trend, which started around 1990 & it is the "Canary in this Coal mine".

Also, German & UK markets are Down some 6-7%!

So, THE "ROLLERCOASTER RIDE CONTINUES", for now!

UP - DOWN & all around!

It is just possible that the Rollercoaster may be coming from the BREXIT VOTE & TPTB trying to intervene?!

Voting, moments ago, according to the BBC, in Brexit is -
To Leave - 6,538,329
To Remain - 6,229,129
