Hey Dad! actress Sarah Monahan says her 35 hours of interviews with police about sex abuse allegations during the show were like therapy.

Monahan, who now lives in the US, first made her allegations about what happened to her on the show when she was a girl in a Woman's Day interview in March.

"For anyone still scared of going to the police, I encourage you to do so," she wrote on her blog this week.

"While yes, you do have to go into every little detail, think of it as therapy. They're there to help you."

The 33-year-old actress said police were "wonderful" and the interview "wasn't nearly as brutal as I thought it was going to be".

She also strongly defended her decision to speak out about the allegations, saying she had no regrets.

"I know that I have given courage to several women to talk about their cases of sexual abuse. Not necessarily by the same man, but by victims in general," Monahan wrote.

"That was what I wanted. I wanted this to become something people could talk about. It shouldn't be a dirty little secret that people are ashamed to talk about. People need to stand up and be heard.

“So think of me what you will. I am still glad I told my story. I'm glad I got people to talk about sexual abuse."

Monahan also defended herself and her co-stars about the money they were paid by the media to speak about the allegations, saying they were "NOT a money making exercise for any of us".

"This was about releasing a demon that we were all carrying for so many years," she wrote.

Her costar on the show, Robert Hughes, 61, who lives in Singapore with his wife, celebrity agent Robyn Gardiner, has denied all allegations.

A spokeswoman for the Sex Crimes Squad said detectives would not comment as investigations were continuing.
