I like camping, but not in camping grounds at the caravan park, or camping grounds at the National Park.

Go find a river and ask the farmer if you can camp near it, or go somewhere where you are legally allowed to camp in the bush off trails.

Bring some rice, flour (damper!), salt, pepper, Kraft Cheddar Cheese (the stuff that you get off the shelf and isn't refrigerated), butter, olive oil, sturdy fruits and vegetables and some tins of food for if you aren't catching fish!

We will bring kilograms of steak and bacon, then bring all the fish back home. This has happened with a few different groups.

That's pretty common, but I've never been camping on the beach. Something about that salt water smell and then eating fish can do it. Freshwater is ok and better for camping as you got easy drinking/cooking water access.

If gun laws weren't so insane you could take a rifle easily and shoot up a couple of rabbits, and if steel jawed traps weren't illegal you could catch a couple that way too, instead of having to eat fish.

I prefer fish though because it's really light and not as filling as meat, doesn't make you as sluggish.

That is, if I can't hire a cabin for the night. Been some years since I have been bush. Must be time for it soon.

Love the beach but hate camping at the beach. The sand getting into everything gives me the maximum runs. Much rather camp inland beside a river. Catch some yabbies. Not a great fan of fresh water fish but enjoy it if it is spiced nicely. Yabbies yum.

Usually take the rifle if we are on a hunting property but that is prearranged and beacuse we have gotten to know the cocky. Bunny stew that has been cooking for 2-3 hours, good stuff.

Easel if I were in a survival situation I would not hesitate to use traps, but they are terribly cruel. An accurate .22 or one of the new .17 rimfires and headshots out to 100 metres is the best way to go. Of course take every opportunity to kill cats and foxes.

I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives.

Yabbies are good to eat, but a bit small, and definitely need salting or they are too bland. Freshwater food is always more bland than saltwater for some reason.

Do you get those lobster yabbies up your way? I don't know what they are, and I don't think you're even supposed to able to catch them in that location, but around Talbingo you can get these lobster sized yabbies that are full of meat. They don't look exactly like yabbies either, they are seriously a dull red colour.

Rabbit traps are ok if you're not far away, you can hear the rabbit scream, another easy way is to set them up and then start jumping on the warren to flush them out.

But yeah I suppose they are a bit cruel, I wouldn't use them because they are illegal. If you want some though you can pick them up for like less than $20 (that would be expensive) at essentially any country garage sale/trash and treasure.

The same traps can be used to catch yabbies and eels, though it may be illegal to do so without licence.

The only problem is very limited amount of cargo space on kayak so I take with me old small surfboard and use it as water trailer to carry my gear.
