Back in the olden days things were bigger.
Look at the old redwood trees, dinosaurs and the beanstalk in jack and the beanstalk.

The Pyramids WERE regular grains of sand.
All the other grains of sand shrank as they aged to the modern day size.
Due to the size and weight of them, they tended to get flat tops, sides and bottoms. Other grains of sand above and on all sides squashed them that way.
People (who were also bigger) used to stack them up in pyramid shapes as a competition.
Only the winning pyramids were left to show how good they got it.

To them we were all a slightly different shade of brown.

They taught the Egyptians to start digging a pyramid 'downward' in the hard dirt. All the excavations produced the sands around Egypt, leaving the pyramids from the firmer stone. Egypt used to be a higher elevation above sea level.
