Catholic church living in sin!
May 28th, 2008 at 11:07am

Quote:
1 Timothy, ch 4

2. Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3. Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats (fish on Good Friday?), which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving;
5. For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Not to mention the images in the Catholic church which are forbidden in the original Ten Commandments.

Why did you highlight the meat bit?

Like where I wrote fish on Good Friday. They tell us not to eat meat on Good Friday and only fish, and in years past it was supposed to be fish only every Friday.

commanding to abstain from meats

Told to abstain from all meats except fish. And fish isn't really considered a meat as such religiously. The Jews can have fish with dairy, it is always kosher etc.

It is my understanding that you are supposed to eat fish, but I've enver heard of abstinence from other meats. You'd have to be rpetty pedantic to interpret that as a violation. Remember that back then people were probably lucky to eat meat once a week.

easel - yes I reckon the statues in catholic churches are forbidden.
As is praying to mary and priests/cardinals not being married.

The fuyll quote I have is

"The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.
For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. "

1 Timothy 4: 1 - 5

I was always taught that you are not allowed to eat meat, only fish on Good Friday, as in abstain from meat.

We probably have different versions of the Bible, but they're very similar. Priests used to be allowed to get married, it was one of the Pope's that changed the rules and made it forbidden. Yeah I was taught by a teacher in Catholic school that praying to Mary was not on, and it should not even be taught, even though we used to have to pray the Hail Mary. It doesn't say anywhere that she is to be revered in such a manner.

A deeply religious person could interpret this as deceit by evil forces, namely Satan or what have you.

I also don't know where Catholic priests get off saying they are responsible for offering forgiveness on behalf of God.

Organised religion just reeks of control to me.

Catholics don't see it as "real meat". It may have something to do with the Old Testament prohibition against blood, and eating meat with blood. This is where the JWs also get their prohibition against meat with blood. They believe you must not eat the blood of meat, but it must be cooked properly.

Fish don't usually bleed.  Tongue

In any case, fish markets do obscene business on Good Friday in Catholic dominated communities.

Agreed.
There are many quotes I can give to support that.

Spirituality is an entirely different matter.

Yes, our versions of the bible could well be different.
They will all say the same story though.

Not being a smartypants, here is a reference about deacons.

"Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task.
Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.
He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.
Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.
They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.

A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well. Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus."

1 timothy 3 :1-13

I hope you are ok with me giving quotes.
I don't meant to sway your thinking, so don't I won't "press the point".
It's healthy to agree to disagree. Feel free to have your say.

RayA - I have no idea where the idea of fish on friday came from !!
can't recall it from my mind. Will contemplate it.

Take care

They do when I cut their throat. Beef Jerkey doesn't bleed either.

sprintcyclist;

Why would I be not ok with you giving me quotes?

What point were you trying to make with that post. I think I missed it.
