Do you hit your fish on the head when you catch them to kill them quickly and humanely?

I agree, Mantra. If I feel like fish I buy it in fillets (or at the fish and chip shop). Grin

Can't stomach a fish on the plate looking up at me. Cry

Mantra, almost all spearfishermen practice 'Iki Jimi', for their own safety, for the sake of the fish, and to improve the taste. You stab it with a knife at the base of the skull, where the spine joins on. I usually cut the throat connection bit as well to bleed them.

Let's hope that 'Iki Jimi' is quick, although it would depend on the size of the fish. What do you mean FD - for the fisherman's own safety?

I've seen fish being hit hard & quickly on the head with a mallet and it is instant death. Stabbing them at the base of the skull could be quite difficult and possibly render them immobile for a while before death.

No matter what we eat, we should try to ease the suffering of our prey as quickly as possible.

Mallet's don't work that well under water. It is not safe to be in the water with a thrashing, gasping, bleeding fish. So you kill it as quickly as possible. It seems to work very well. The fish spasms in your arms when you first break the spinal column, then stops moving completely.

I've only ever seen a mallet used once, one a small shark. I can't imagine someone taking a mallet to a small or medium sized fish. I guess the best tool would depend on the fish and the situation.
