Thanks to the protected places such as Darling Harbour and the mangrove reserves around Parramatta fish are able to breed and not be threatened, so fishing in the legal places in the harbour is very good!

Actually most of our fish do not breed in estuaries but out at sea. The juveniles tend to live in estuaries until they mature, hence the popular misconception.

I'm not aware of any protected areas in the Harbour.

There are some areas in Darling Harbour where you cannot fish, other areas where you can.

You can always catch fish in the harbour if you use local or live bait and have a basic knowledge of fish holding structure.

I've seen them have bream comps in the harbour, using lures. Those televised comps, with the super fast fishing boats (look like ski boats, sort of), ET was involved in one of them.

The prawn trawlers, when they used to run in the harbour, according to a guy who worked on one (it was a family boat I think), would sometimes bring in hundreds of bream from one drop of the net, none under 40cm (apparently they stick in schools of similar sized fish?). Of course not being licensed to take fish, had to throw them back.

There's fish there, they just don't like being caught.
