Destruction of threads
Feb 21st, 2008 at 3:12pm

There are some good topics and debates in Ozpolitics, but they keep getting interrupted by some people, who have to abuse each other, regardless of how annoying it is to others on the thread.

Can't you all ignore each other - IQ has made some effort - so Boxing Kangaroo there's no point to you posting in here at all.  You have nothing to offer and are just trashing Ozpolitics and stirring things up,  when genuine people want to post here.

Just a suggestion FD about your layout.  You could really make the Politics Forum a bit bigger - maybe by putting two topics on display in the "last post" column - instead of one - just in the Politics Forum to start.   There looks as though there would be enough room if you made that column a fraction wider.  It's only a suggestion and could attract more people.  You could do the same thing to the other forums later if necessary.

Thanks for the suggestions mantra. I'm still trying to figure out how to have only the thread title in bold. I don't have a lot of time at the moment. Hopefully I will also be able to get a single board that contains all threads, which may make the other idea unecessary.

In case anyone isn't aware, here is a list of all recent threads from all boards:

When you say politics, do you mean the politicians suck board?

I agree on ignoring people. Sometimes people let their emotions get the better of them and post abuse. It doesn't help if other members jump on it and try to perpetuate it for as long as possible, then keep bringing it up again. It's far easier to deal with when only one person is getting out of hand.

Yes it would have to be PS - even though the title is a bit rough.  Political subjects seem to run into the other forums and it just means jumping around a bit to find out which thread you were last on.

That's why it would be better if the "Politicians Suck" forum was a bit larger showing another topic or so just so visitors don't have to go hunting for a particular thread in other forums.

I know it's difficult if you're busy, but I wouldn't worry about the date still being in bold - it's a definite improvement with the thread name in bold.  I'm not sure what progam you use, but couldn't you just drop down the line dividing the forums and ............put 2 subjects up for a start.  Didn't Musician say he used Excel - maybe you do?  I don't know what the formula would be to have 2 consecutive subjects up - it might be easy or it might be very time consuming.

I can't use excel for this. I have to program it in perl. I'm warming to the idea of multiple threads listed for the general, global and politicians boards. I use another forum where they list three instead of one and it works well. I will look into it, but it will take a while because it is not as trivial as it first appears. Either the software that runs these boards was poorly structured or the perl language itself is poorly structured.

Yes I believe you.  It would be quite complicated, unless you're an IT whiz kid.  3 topics on those forums sounds like a great idea.

I do sometimes reply to the abuse with short posts, but generally I think ignoring someone is far more painful than answering them. I've posted on boards with few rules, and open slather on anyone's character, and they are demeaning. I can give as good as I get, and have done so, but I've learned that the best medicine is IGNORE. When you answer at any length, you feed them. Let their posts sink to the bottom of the pile with no replies. Far better and more effective than censorship, because if you censor, they become martyrs.
