To help the world
Jun 26th, 2007 at 11:52am

What can we do to decisively help the world ?

Carbon credits and solar panels are all very nice. More a "ground-up" method.
I want to see a HUGE difference rapidly.

My thought is to dramatically reduce the overall population in the world.

bring back the electric car - it has no emissons, runs like a normal car and would stop our addiction to foreign oil (which would mean that we wouldn't need to fight wars for oil).

they got developed in the 1990's, but was killed off by the car and oil companies.

well reducing population is not dramatic or immediate or even medium term..but I get your drift.

The electric car stiil uses electricity per se..but much less pollution I gather Gavin. How about just start to walk or ride bikes where possible instread of firing up the engine for  small errands etc.

Turn off lights=immediate

turn down the water heater=immediate

put on warm clothes instead of running heaters etc=immediate

Turn appliances off at the wall instead of having them ob 'standby'=immediate

Having short showers/baths=immediate

There are so many immediate ways.

Using public transport wherever possible etc.

Get out and play more instaed of sitting in front of comps and tvs=immediate and getting fit in mind/ body.

I agree Sprintcyclist.  Seeing as we have to live in this global world order now - it should be mandated that we are all restricted to 2 children each.  There was a progam the other night saying that we haven't got reserves of food in store for the future and as the global population increases we will not have the resources to feed them.

We need to be worried - especially with climate change which will even further restrict our food production.

To say that the electric car has no emissions is a bit misleading. The actual car itself has no emissions, but that's because the power source is further upstream. Until all or most of our electricity comes from renewables, switching to the electric car would actually increase our emissions, because of the extra energy conversion steps involved and because coal has more emissions than oil. The electric car is 'one piece of the puzzle' for a 'grand solution' that is still a long way off.

Limiting people to two children is a bit extreme and would lead to an ever decreasing population. Three may be reasonable in the long term. In western countries, there is currently no need to limit population growth - it is consumption growth that is the problem.

reducing the population of the earth sounds fine but even that would take at least 50 yrs to see any appreciable impact....China had its one child policy and that was very difficult and let to many human right s abuses of children/babies etc.

We could just stop prolonging the life of the old and infirmed ..

They drain a lot of time energy and resources just to give them some quality of life. Let it be and let nature take its course as it used to before technology tried to find ways to make us all live to 150 yrs old. The earth had a natural balance and order.

Man has interfered...like he does everything.

Wether we like it or not..the elderly are a drain on the economy and put nothing in. Not to say they arent loved and precious in thyre own right, But id hate to see a world full of old pple rather than young ie: the  future of the world.

An awful subject..but when we start talking about population reduction..its never easy to decide .

Wouldn't a 30% reduction in ecological footprint per person be easier? People tend to forget about the environment when someone is trying to kill them.

if thats the case Sprint theyd be looking at developed nations first. Not Africa and Nigeria as such. The deveolped nations produce the most pollutiion by a huge margin.

Look out sprint here they come aaarrrgghhhh!!!

Oceans, we could. Seems retrograde to cull the more advnced peoples though.

What can a 3rd world country offer humaity ?
They may be at a stage where in the coming years they will damage the environment the most, for the least benefit.

There is also the idea tha the world is becoming out of balance weight wise.
The growing population in china and india put more weigh in the northern hemisphere.
The declining resources form Aussue reduce our weight here.
We need to "lose weight" moreso in recently high growth countries.
