Ausholes query on "When do we start to exist".
Apr 24th, 2007 at 12:52pm

Aushole asked

"How can humanity be proven to exist? You will say because it is real in the physical world. But when does each human start to exist? Is it at the time you were conceived? The time you were born? The time that you became aware of your existence?

These are important concepts, because prior to your being in the physical world, you did not exist. And you will not exist in 100 years time. So when you are not existing, where are you?

I see this is the reason that spirituality and God(s) become an important part of many people's lives, to neatly explain human existence. "

Oceans reply

"We start at conception.  There can be no other beginning ."

We could be said to begin well before conception.

A womans eggs are there when she is born.
At least one "part" of us is there well before our mother can even fall pregnant.
Women do not generate eggs as they live, they have all they will ever have at thier own birth.
Unlike us men who are walking pollen factories Smiley.

Many of our characteristics come from our ancestors.
We start a very long time before our conception, well before we are a sparkle in our dads eyes.

what a thought.

I began at conception..we are only a whole when DNA from father and mother come together to FORM a whole. That whole becomes us.

This doesnt make a lot of sense sprint.

It is an interesting perspective.

Sprint are you familiar with the idea that we are just 'machines' designed by self replicating chemicals to assist with replication?

oceans - we are around before conception. Within our ancestors. That is where we come from.

A parents habits (smoking) has an effect on the unconcieved child.

Freediver, that is a very interesting concept.

Starts to spill over into the realms of science fiction-

It is not science fiction. It's just a different perspective based on the theory of natural selection. Rather than saying that we pass on our DNA, you say that our DNA uses us to pass itself on.

That is an interesting perspective freediver.

I heard a saying about organ donation, similar in perspective to yours.

"Donating an organ is not just someones organ being used to give life to another whole entire person.
It is also the that other persons whole entire being all working to give life to that persons single organ."

Correct, except that life is usually defined to include the potential for indefinite reproduction.
