Bullying builds character?

http://www.smh.com.au/news/breaking-news/bullying-builds-character-court-told/2007/02/27/1172338607678.html

A woman who sought help after her six-year-old son was throttled by an older student was told by an education official that bullying "builds character", a court heard on Tuesday.

Benjamin Cox is suing the NSW government, claiming not enough was done to protect him from playground abuse that allegedly began when he was five years old.

His mother Angela Cox, from Raymond Terrace near Newcastle, told the NSW Supreme Court that the bullying, which started nearly 13 years ago, had had a lasting impact on her son.

Ben, now 18, had no interest in getting a job and was only educated to a year 7 level, she said.

The bullying began when a student began stealing from Ben in 1994 when he was in kindergarten at Woodberry Public School, near Maitland in the NSW Hunter Valley, Mrs Cox said.

The situation escalated and in 1995, when Ben was six, he was choked by another student, she said.

"(There were) red welts around his throat, you could actually see the finger marks around the front of his throat," Mrs Cox said.

When she approached the NSW education department at Maitland about protection for her son, an official told her bullying could be good for Ben, Mrs Cox said.

"Ian Wilson told me that bullying builds character and it was a good thing that Ben got bullied," she told the court.

Freediver..

That is the mosty rediculous thing I ever heard..How could anyone tell a parent that bullying is 'good for hers son?

I experienced a degree of bullying at school, as a family we moved quite a lot and I had to settle into numerous schools ..I/we, my brother and seemed to be the new soft targets at more schools than I care to remember. The only character it built in me in the end was I found that when I stood up to bullies they showed me resepect..ie in a way I then became a bully, as it elevated my status, but not in a good way!!

Having said this even though eventually I became free from bullying and became someone else..I still suffred scars emotionally that did stay with me and I still havent forgotten the times I was bullied mercilessly and how isolated and alone I felt.

Being bullied as a kid, is not just something that kids have to go thru as right of passage of being a kid..it set in stone the adult we become..I am not  bully now..but I am more assertive than I would have been had I not been thru this at school.
When I started to challenge the bullies..I felt powerful. I can only put this down to a revenge is sweet menatality..I dont think its uncommon for kids who are bullied at school to become bullies..but some go the other way..and Im talking about suicide..

To high a price to pay for the rite of passage of being a kid,!!!!

There's nothing worse than a bully.  When you stand up to one you usually find they are cowards.  How could people get satisfaction out of hurting something or someone weaker than themselves?

I can relate to Auzgurl - I was bullied in infants school - I think I was a bit of a sook, but soon came to realise that by standing up to the bully, you don't actually become a bully, but at least you can humiliate the humiliater.

Big payout for boy bullied at NSW school

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Big-payout-for-boy-bullied-at-NSW-school/2007/05/14/1178995043938.html

A teenager will receive substantial damages after successfully suing the NSW government because he was bullied at primary school.

NSW Supreme Court judge Justice Carolyn Simpson ruled that the school had "grossly failed" in its duty of care to Benjamin Cox.

The judge accepted that Mr Cox had been subjected to "harassment, bullying and assault" at the hands of the older pupil.

She also accepted that his mother had made repeated attempts to have the school authorities intervene and control the pupil's conduct.

Mr Cox is now unemployable, suffering from a severe psychiatric condition, which the judge concluded was a consequence of the breach of duty of care.

The amount of the damages award is expected to be calculated on Monday.

It will include $213,500 for "non-economic loss".

"It has other implications, particularly in the context where the prime minister is talking about this sort of matter in the press today," he said.

School bullying can be controlled: study

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/School-bullying-can-be-controlled-study/2007/07/11/1183833578014.html

School bullying - which affects one in six children - can be controlled if students, teachers and parents work together, a new study has found.

The study of 4,000 students from six western Sydney high schools looked at physical and verbal bullying as well as covert forms such as anonymous text messages.

It found bullies and their victims are not separate groups, with some victims also being bullies themselves.

Psychologist Dr Roberto Parada, who conducted the two-year study on behalf of the Centre for Educational Research at the University of Western Sydney, said changing the attitudes of bystanders who witnessed bullying was crucial to solving the problem.
