This attack was horrendous.

Apparently, the bastard rammed into her, pinning her to the back of her vehicle, reversed and rammed into her a second time.  Angry

There should be a law against attacks like this with a minimum 10 year sentence.

Oh greggy, yet another own goal. Roll Eyes  The attacker is in fact Brendan Nugent, a radical leftist and 'free palestine' terrorist supporting activist who has probably mistaken Haines for an ON candidate as her car is orange with her name on the side.

This might have nothing to do with her politics.

Ten years?  I was considering minimum 25 for attempted murder occasioning serious bodily harm.

Whoever the prick was it was planned and well timed and obviously he knew her routine.

Yup - be some lunatic leftie of today.

Note:-  I'm of the 'left persuasion' a genuine socialist capitalist type looking for a fine balance as opposed to the edges of the extremes... just not that kind of 'leftie'.

There are socialists and there are ELS - Extreme Left Socialists or Ultra-socialists - sort of designer label Communists who love the fruits of capitalism.  As for Beria and Himmler - not the thickness of a cigarette paper between them.

Helen Haines attack live updates: Indi MP struck twice by car outside Wangaratta office after driver did U-turn, remains in critical condition after surgery; 43-year-old Tarrawingee man in custody

Indi MP Helen Haines is in a critical condition after she was struck by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, in north-east Victoria, just after 3.30pm yesterday.

Haines was struck by a Toyota LandCruiser outside her office in Murphy Street yesterday. The 65-year-old MP suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Melbourne for treatment where she remains in a critical condition.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said this morning that witnesses to the alleged attack saw a vehicle conduct a U-turn to ram Haines against a vehicle, before reversing and hitting her a second time.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said last night during a press conference that it was an intentional attack and was being investigated in a multi-agency effort, but that it was too early to determine the motivation of the attack.

The man arrested over the attack has been revealed as 43-year-old Tarrawingee man Brendan Nugent. He was arrested at the scene and remains in custody. Police say he will be interviewed today.

Fellow parliamentarians – including Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, Greens leader David Shoebridge and Victorian Premier Ben Carroll – expressed their horror and sadness at the attack last night, and said political violence should not be accepted as a normal part of public life in Australia.

Alleged attacker identified as Brendan Nugent

The man arrested over the attack on Helen Haines has been revealed as 43-year-old Tarrawingee man Brendan Nugent.

Three sources with knowledge of the investigation confirmed Nugent’s identity as counter-terrorism police and ASIO probe possible motives for the attack which left Haines with critical injuries after she was struck by a car outside her electoral office in Wangaratta.

Nugent has a history of activism in the area, but one source who knew him said he had strayed into “darker” things since his days protesting logging in the local forest.

He remains in custody and police say he will be interviewed today.

If this is true, it looks like an environmentalist "Greenie" is the offender ...

Why would an environmentalist attack Helen Haines?   Undecided

Terrible attack. Rather than examine greater security for just politicians perhaps they should examine our legal systems because incidents such as these are occurring in the community too frequently.

Just so.

Quote:
ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess says while the terror threat level remains at 'probable,' the temperature and trajectory of the security environment is "concerning".

Burgess says words matter and that he has repeatedly put on the record his concern about the use of violent rhetoric in the public discourse.

He says elevated levels of grievance, intolerance and polarisation have continued to create a "permissive environment of violence".

He says his organisation has seen direct correlations between inflamed language, inflamed tensions and acts of violence.

"While political differences, debates and peaceful protests are essential parts of a healthy democracy, ASIO has seen direct correlations between inflamed language, inflamed tensions and acts of violence," Burgess says.

Interesting take from David Pellowe - thoughts?  Is this a case of extreme religion?

https://www.facebook.com/DavePellowe

"Sadly Helen Haines may lose her life if not her legs.. It’s also sad that she backed the rules that locked you out while your grandmother died alone.

She treated medical autonomy as optional and supported abortion on demand plus voluntary assisted dying.

Then a man deliberately drove a car at her. Now she is in intensive care and the political class suddenly remembered that violence is bad, while still defending the ideas that treated some lives as optional.

On Monday she was hit by a LandCruiser outside her office, critically injured, and airlifted to The Alfred. A 43-year-old man found with a knife, known to ASIO was arrested at the scene.

Albanese called it deliberate.

The attack is pure evil. No excuses. The driver belongs in prison.

Helen Haines publicly supported Victoria’s abortion laws, some of the worst in the world. She backed assisted suicide for the elderly and the sick.

During COVID she pushed the vaccine rollout against peoples will, treated dissent as a threat, and accepted a system that kept families from the dying.

For years that class of politicians told ordinary Australians their rights were optional: you could not see your dying parent, your body was not fully yours, unborn lives could be discarded, and the frail could be offered an early exit.

Question it and you were the problem.

They normalised the idea that some lives and some freedoms do not matter when the ends suit them. Then they act shocked when an unstable man applies a version of the same logic to a politician.

Disclaimer: The attacker is fully responsible for his crime. Nothing justifies running someone down. But the years of state coercion and disposable lives created the climate in which this kind of madness becomes more thinkable.

Condemn the violence. Jail the perpetrator.

AND get rid of the policies that taught people certain rights and certain people were optional.

Helen should not be in hospital. No.

At worst, jail. "

Former Labor leader Bill Shorten has told ABC Radio Canberra people "doing their jobs shouldn't have to face violence".

"If that turns out to be what's happened which it all seems to be that way. So, it's quite shocking," he said.

"We don't know the motive of the alleged assailant, but I don't know why some people think that their views are so pure and perfect, they've got a right to think they can hate and abuse others."

Ben Carroll has also said it's time to pay serious attention to online hate, misogyny and the targeting of female representatives.

"But there's no doubt in society that we are living in a more polarised, post-fact information system than ever before," the Victorian premier said on ABC Radio Melbourne earlier.

"Algorithms are controlling so much of the narrative these days … in this post-fact information system, there are no consequences for what goes on on online platforms."
