Chinese Military Bases in The Solomons?

This scenario is critical to the longer-term security of Australia.
I don't want to sound like Henny-Penny...  "The Sky is Falling!",
but this sort of insidious military expansion by China has to be
curtailed in some way.

The Solomon Islands are 1,660 km from Australia's coast—which
is exactly the distance from Sydney to Adelaide—to give it some
perspective.  Can we really risk having a Chinese military base and
airfield on the Solomons?

The Chinese Xi'an H-6 strategic bomber has an operational range
of 6,000 km, and can carry 12,000kg of bombs, plus an assortment
of anti-ship missiles.

Anyway...

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has praised
China's political system and suggested that democracy leads to
moral decay and gay marriage, in a fiery pre-election speech
yesterday.  He lavished praise on the Chinese government, saying
his government's decision to switch diplomatic recognition to Beijing
"put Solomon Islands on the map" and that "China was no longer a
communist nation".

"You don't see beggars in China asking for money...  you see that in
every major city in the United States and it's supposed to be the
number one economy in the world.  The values associated with
democracy, for example, you are free to do whatever you want. Men
can marry men, women can marry women—those are the values
associated with the values of democracy".

Sogavare is currently the favourite to win the Solomon Islands national
election next month.

Excerpted from ABC News Australia, 20 March 2024.

It's a tricky one isn't it?

But as Brian Ross said: "The affairs, laws, and culture of foreign countries are none of our business" ... however, Manasseh Sogavare is a conservative, so Ross might just verbally intervene with his objection to Sogavare being against gay marriage

Technically the globalist Libs and Labs can't do anything about China in the Solomons until China shows definite signs of aggression towards Australia, so we're powerless until then

These Pacific nations will continue to play Australia off against China in order to get as much as they can with no thought for the long term implications.

When the Liberals ABC funding pushed the ABC out of the Pacific the result was always going to be a strategic win for China. China took over the licenses to Australia's broadcast frequencies. For close to a century the radio voice to the Pacific was English broadcast by the ABC today the voice of the Pacific is chinese broadcast by China. Yes this was a present to China from the Liberal party.

30 years ago when I worked on Solomon isles  and in PNG
locals were very negative about Chinese and Australian High Commissioner was top authority in Honiara.
What is happening now is due to neglect by Australian governments but also bad behavior by mining companies.

While I don't like this deal with PNG I can understand why it was done. We can't outspend the PRC so we have to think of other ways to bribe the PI nations into cooperating with us. Any PNG politician will think twice about pocketing cash from China if it means their league team is booted from the Australian comp, resulting in a lot of annoyed PNG voters.
