Former ministers to front robodebt probe

Two more former coalition government ministers are set to front the robodebt royal commission when its third block of hearings kicks off.

Former social services minister Christian Porter and former human services minister Alan Tudge will give evidence about their roles in the unlawful debt collection scheme.

Ministerial colleagues Scott Morrison and Marise Payne gave evidence in the second hearing block, with each denying they had knowledge of legal advice flagging issues with the proposed scheme.

Mr Morrison said he was focused on tackling welfare fraud and wasn’t across departmental discussion into its legality.

Senator Payne said she didn’t know why legal issues flagged in earlier briefings were omitted from the final policy proposal.

Mr Tudge will front the commission next Wednesday, while Mr Porter will follow the day after.

Robodebt involved using individuals’ annual tax information provided by the ATO to determine average fortnightly earnings and automatically establish welfare debts, an approach ruled unlawful by the Federal Court in 2019.

The system wrongly recovered more than $750 million from 381,000 people and led to several people taking their lives while being pursued for false debts.

The commission says the third hearing block will focus on the impacts of robodebt along with the criticism of the scheme after it was implemented and ongoing legal defence despite such criticism.

It will also explore how ministers and governments used the media throughout the scheme, and measures taken when alleged debts weren’t paid.

Services Australia deputy CEO Christopher Birrer and former Social Services director Anthony Barford will front the commission on Monday.

Two individuals will give case study evidence along with Lyndsey Jackson, who coordinated the #NotMyDebt campaign.

The 160 000 Australians whom were targeted by this illegal scheme did nothing wrong and the Government knew it....Some innocent people killed themselves over false debts they never owed....You are an apologist for corruption and the persection of innocent people....You should be ashamed of yourself for excusing corruption and promoting persecution you scum bag!!!

A good order of Australia would go a long way - one like - shape up or ship out.... we don't need your kind here and unless you lift your game, join the crowds at the exit gates.

How could anyone not know that averaging income over twelve months when income support was calculated on fortnightly earnings would never yield a valid result? How stupid does a person have to be to become a government 'minister'?

I'll say it again - this looks like a sneaky way of saying 'the dole is only a loan, not a right'... so typical of the right ... usually we try to feed hungry mouths, not arseholes.

Well - it failed and the costs should come out of these fancy dancer's retirement funds .....

Relying on government for your resources in life is always a bad strategy

That goes for individuals with regards to their health both physical and financial
That goes for farmers and miners
That goes for small business and for large business

Members of modern society have become so dependant on an authority figure to look after them from cradle-to-grave
That this is now considered normal

It's not normal

That's the system run in North Korea

If you want to be the sort of individual who can bounce out of bed and feel strong powerful and have agency in your own life
Then you don't need to, in a lazy and fearful way,
Hand over every aspect of your life 2 some authority figure to look after for you

From the age of about 15 you start to take on personal responsibility
And the idea that are treasury in Canberra looks after your needs becomes an abhorrent idea

Only infants and frightened primary school students runoff to an authority figure every time they encounter a problem
If you feel the need to suckle on the breast of the federal government from cradle-to-grave
I think it's high time the federal government introduced a program of weaning you off

what that has to do with robodebt is that i just went through my hundred or so kids, cousins, cousins kids, aunties uncles and i added in my hundred or so freinds and maybe another 100 or so neighbours and i could not really think of ONE of them that had ever darkened the door of a centrelink office. there may be a few who get a part aged pension but thats it.

i dont think thats the same reality for most of the posters on here.

why on earth would anyone go to centrelink anyway, in a country where with a little bit of brain power and a lit bit of a work ethic, you can make orders of magnitude more then some crap benefit from the government

its the act of an insane person.

you can get your mower and go mow lawns for $60 a pop.
i have a relative with a lawn mowing business.
he has people BEGGING him to mow their lawn because they cant get anyone.

$60 a pop and you do 4 by lunchtime

by lunchtime monday , you've made more then the dole and youve got in a good workout.

only a crazy person would go near centrelink.

and i bet for every person who robodebt overcharged, there are 1000 takers who are getting benefits they shouldnt be getting,

when do these fine ministers get their order of australia.

what horseboy isnt telling you, is how many times as a farmer, he has put his hand out and collected more than most centre link recipients.
(at this point he will come back and deny ever receiving any help from aussie taxpayers)
