Whether being left behind (a real feature of this movie) was what actually happened -- although I know Mike Durant was left behind -- I would not know. But, the military has forgotten other soldiers during operational campaigns.

There are times when it is impossible to recover all personnel...... Mike Durant was fortunate in several ways and was eventually recovered. Two Special Forces Detachment D soldiers lost their lives trying to defend the site and both received the Medal of Honour. They volunteered.
