Liberals Have Failed Navel Ship Building Industry

NEW SUBMARINE DEAL RAISES CRITICAL QUESTIONS   Sad
The tripartite nuclear-powered submarine deal raises critical questions for Australia’s shipbuilding industry, the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) say.
September 19 2021 AMWU.
The AMWU call on the Morrison Government to fill in the gaps and show how this plan will deal with existing jobs, create secure jobs, and answer questions on what will happen over the next 18 months as consultation begins.

Existing shipbuilding workers deserve transparency around their future, including those already in training for jobs the Government has guaranteed as part of its plan to develop a sovereign capability around our submarines.

Quotes attributable to AMWU Assistant National Secretary Glenn Thompson

“The futures of thousands of workers’ jobs have been thrown into doubt in a 15-minute press conference in which three world leaders announced that they were killing of a $90bn project with zero detail on what will replace it.

“We need the Morrison Government to come clean on the detail – on how this will create a sovereign industry capability, secure jobs and critically, what will happen with existing workers.

“We also need to know what this means for the plans to build surface ships in Australia and develop a consistent, rolling build to avoid the boom-and-bust cycle of the past.

“All we have is an empty promise that the nuclear-powered submarines will be built in Adelaide. Right now, we don’t have that technology – what’s Morrison’s plan to build it and how many secure, reliable and ongoing jobs will it create?”

“The Morrison Government have wasted billions of dollars on the French submarine deal, which will now be abandoned. After nearly a decade in power, the Liberals have failed our naval ship building industry.”

Well, seeing as the Federal Liberals have failed (and wasted astronomical amounts of taxpayers' money) with just about everything over the past 8 years *cough*NBN*cough* I don't see how anyone could be surprised about this?

Besides, it provides a nice distraction from their incompetence in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, especially with a Federal election due shortly.

And, when ScoMo's clowns lose the election, they can just 'handball' the mess to the incoming Labor government and walk away...

Makes sense if anything about the defense industry was predictable. Given the insanely suicidal games nation states play there’s little we can acurately predict other than our kind being removed from the planet by our own stupidity.

Building submarines out of "Navels" is painstaking work.

Adelaide is just a large non-productive city full of public servants and various other layabouts producing nothing contributing nothing risking nothing

Come to think of it that's true for most Urban folk Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Since Paul Keating, every prime minister has attacked or assassinated the submarines of his or her predecessor. Bob Hawke commissioned the six Collins subs.

The Keating government, already getting stingy with defence expenditure, considered but rejected increasing the order from six to nine, yet six was manifestly inadequate for Australia.

The Howard government was generally good on national security but it disgracefully and relentlessly demonised the Collins subs to try to hurt then opposition leader Kim Beazley, with whom they were associated.

This broadcast weakness to our enemies and convinced the Australian people that big Australian defence projects were a joke. It was highly irresponsible.

Kevin Rudd rightly decided we needed 12 new regionally dominant subs. This was news to the navy, which couldn’t crew the six subs we already had (and still can’t), but it was the right decision. Julia Gillard trashed the Rudd project by radically starving Defence of money.

Tony Abbott tried to solve the problem by getting the Japanese to build us a fleet of subs. This involved deep strategic wisdom and would have integrated the US, Japan and Australia in submarine technology.

Malcolm Turnbull assassinated Abbott and sank Abbott’s Japanese subs. He contracted for French subs instead. Turnbull himself was assassinated in due course and now Morrison has sunk Turnbull’s French subs.
