I long for the 'good old days' when I caught the bus to and from school in the late 60's and early 70's. Transperth was called the MTT (Metropolitan Transport Trust) back then.

I remember the prominent signs on the buses which said something like "Children must stand for adults or pay full adult fare" or words to that effect. Not "should stand" like we see today. However, I think the only ones now are the signs for the seats at the front for the elderly and people with wheelchairs and prams.

Same as school students and their concession fares being told they must stand for adults in my school days. Mind you, back then the majority of young people would give up their seats for adults regardless of whether there were signs or not.

I went to a car show at Ascot Racecourse last year, and they had a few of those old MTT buses that we used to catch.

Was good to climb up into one again.

I'm pretty sure this was one of them:

Love those old buses, Greg.

Here's one I took a picture of on January 21st. 2017.

It was at the Perth Cultural Centre just north of Perth Railway Station.

Could actually be a former Transperth bus with MTT painted on it, not too sure? Doesn't really look old enough to have been a MTT bus.

It had Speed (the Keanu Reeves/Sandra Bullock movie) posters all over it and the blackboard laying sideways in front of it says "SPEED THE MUSICAL, THE MOVIE, THE PLAY".

Can't remember much about it apart from that - I was just walking through there at the time.

My GP would have been my first choice but they're not doing Covid booster vaccinations.

I did have my second AstraZeneca dose at my GP last September though (first AZ was at the now long closed Perth Domestic Airport State clinic in June last year).

There's a pop-up clinic at my local Woolworths in Vic Park.

Walked straight in this afternoon and got my 4th jab.

No waiting, no appointment   Smiley

All done (for another 6 months, I guess).

And 6 more deaths.

Still waiting for that "soft landing" Mark McGowan promised us. The wheels haven't even touched the runway yet by the look of things.

Noticed a few more people than usual wearing masks at Belmont Forum earlier which is good to see.

Perhaps the newspaper and TV "honest for a change Covid isn't over coverage" over the past few days has woken a few more people up?

I was reading about the chaos at Perth Airport in the paper this morning.

Over 200 flights in and out of Perth have been cancelled (a lot of them right at the last minute) since the start of the school holidays a week and a half ago.

Apart from the ongoing issues that Qantas is having, Virgin and the other airlines are having the same problems... at least there was some honesty in the article where the airlines admitted that staff shortages due to Covid was part of the problem (a big part, I'll bet).

I was also reading about an online travel site the other day where people could post messages about their travel experiences and they were concerned that so many people were posting messages about how bad Qantas is these days so the site's moderator asked for more people to post their positive experiences to "balance things out a bit".

Someone said:

"I flew with Qantas and they lost my luggage. But, the good thing is I don't have so much washing to do now. Is this the sort of positive story they're looking for?"

Basil Zempilas being his usual idiot self again.  Roll Eyes

"fine".

Yeah, right... he'll be back to whining endlessly if masks become mandatory again... backed up by the usual chorus of whingeing coffee shop owners, of course.

Which buzz is Basil referring to? Because Perth lost its buzz years ago. Maybe more L.E.D lights will get the buzz back

He must be thinking the buzz of meth, Perth definitely has that.

Looks like Mark McGowan is in a bit of a dilemma at the moment... latest predictions are that Foot and Mouth Disease will get into Australia and probably hit WA first.

https://thewest.com.au/news/health/experts-warn-foot-and-mouth-disease-set-to-hi...

Paywalled as usual but you get the idea (actually, I read it in today's West Australian but the headline tells the story).

Mark's dilemma is.... will he restrict or stop travel to and from Bali (hint from the article - he won't at this stage because of the tourism $$$) or will he risk devastating Australia's agricultural industry when FMD arrives and spreads?

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode!

Oh, the West also interviewed a few people at Perth Airport who were just leaving for Bali and they didn't even know what FMD is let alone know anything about any plans to stop it entering Australia.

Today's WA Covid report if anyone's interested:

https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/Media-releases/2022/July/COVID-19-update-15-July-20...

Quiz time: Name the famous movie this accurate cartoon is based on (Basil Zempilas could probably answer it easily).

(Answer here).

He won't upset the Bali brigade.

(I'm the only person in Perth who has never been to Bali)

FMD is coming (with the next wave of COVID), and this won't end well.

My mother could not eat sharp cheese—tongue and cheeks would blister if she did.

This was courtesy of her school years—farm boys would roll up to school in horse drawn conveyances and bring mild f&MD with them. Enough to rob Mum of a culinary pleasure for life—she loved cheese!

Hmm...

COVID in WA: Mark McGowan says he’ll be wearing masks ‘as appropriate’ amid virus surge

Paywalled as usual.

That's nice, Mark. Now, if you could just convince (preferably mandate) almost everyone else to do the same that would be great.

And also define "as appropriate".

Oh, normally I would be buying The West Australian later so I could read the story but because the price has gone up from $1.70 to $2.00 from today I've decided not to bother anymore.

Only for the Monday to Friday edition at the moment. Saturday's West is still $2.90 and The Sunday Times is still $3.00.

And besides, why should I now spend $10.00 a week (Mon-Fri) for something which is really just a big Harvey Norman catalogue with a bit of a "news" paper inside it?  Roll Eyes

Saw some people I know at The Coffee Club in Belmont Forum this morning, they had a copy of The West Australian so I borrowed it and took pictures of the story in my previous post.

So, it's still only "pleas" and "highly encouraged" which I'm sure won't make much difference but I did notice that even though it wasn't very busy at Belmont Forum it looked like more people than usual were wearing masks today which is a good sign.

Some of us were wondering where Mark McGowan had disappeared to until we've seen him in the paper today - maybe he caught Covid again on his overseas trip which wouldn't have  been surprising.

Sorry about the slight 'crop' on the left side of the bottom part of the newspaper article - it was taken with my mobile phone and I was in a bit of a hurry. There was also a full page ad in the paper as per the article but I didn't get a picture of it.

environmental catastrophe

According to estimates by Greenpeace Taiwan, during the apex of the pandemic, from early February to mid May, Taiwan produced and used roughly 1.3 billion surgical masks. Assuming each face mask weighs 4 grams, that’s 5,500 metric tonnes of general waste generated within a span of three months. To put that figure into perspective, each garbage truck is capable of transporting 5 tonnes of trash at a time, so Taiwan produced enough face masks over a three-month period to fill 1,100 garbage trucks. Furthermore, according to existing rules and regulations regarding the disposal of surgical face masks, used face masks are “unrecyclable” due to the fact that they may be contaminated and could potentially lead to indirect infection and viral transmission if they enter the recycle system.
