You Got To Have A Sickie Now And Again

40pc of young adult workers fake sick days

    The Australian
    December 17, 2014

MORE than 40 per cent of young adult workers have faked a sick day in the past year, with many employees claiming to suffer “Mondayitis’’.

An online poll of 1035 workers by the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Workplace Leadership measured how employees viewed their work, asking which employees were more likely to fake a sick day and who was more likely to look forward to their Monday mornings.

About 43 per cent of surveyed workers aged 18 to 24 years old admitted to faking a sick day.

Workers over 45 and those in executive or management positions were less likely to fake illness.

Just 19 per cent of senior and executive managers suffered `Mondayitis’, in contrast to 42 per cent of total employees.

Director of the Centre, Professor Peter Gahan, said the “results show that if you take a sickie, you’re more likely to look forward to going to work on a Monday”.

“This may imply that people who take ‘mental health days’ feel more in control of their working life, and that those who work part-time are more enthusiastic about returning to work,’’ he said.

“There are also warning bells for middle managers.

“Thirty-six per cent of middle managers admit to faking a sick day in the past twelve months and 47 per cent believe that their counterparts are being paid more than they are.”

Most of the stats are BS.

All my life people have taken sickies when not sick. A lot of people also don't.

Managers are less likely to tell the truth about their time off.

Managers are just as likely to take a sickie but probably call it something different. Many managers have many more days away from work than employees without the need to justify their time or even falsely putting it down to being work related. I could give many outrageous examples.

Why do so many studies just tell us what we already know.

Throughout my working life, most people used up their sickies, at least the five without certificate ones, it was to be expected. Very few people had all their sick days intact at the end of the twelve month period.

In the public sector, there are all sorts of special leave days.....sick spouse, sick kids, dead relatives (only the close ones, not second cousin once removed).

The same legislation covers all.

Most do take all their leave but many don't - they are mostly sorry in the end it gives no benefit to them at all.

To not "chuck a sickie" now and then is unAustralian.

Those that look down on or tut tut the practice should be sent back to where they came from - either that, or taken out the back and given a permanent lights out with a cricket bat. We don't need the likes of you trying to ruin it for the rest of us.

have no respect for lazy people.
if you love your kids, you will want to be there for them, you wont be lazy.
if you love your garden, you will spend time with it, you wont be lazy.
if someone said "I love my garden" but their garden was brown and overrun we would doubt their sincerity.

if you love your job, you will want to be there for it, you will want it to grow (like your garden), you will want to stand back with pride at what you have created. it will be a joyful experience to go to work.

those who chuck "sickies" are not loving people, they are mentally lazy and laziness is the very opposite spectrum of love.

they should change jobs
