The Israeli Central Elections Committee has counted all votes, including those cast by military personnel.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling bloc is in the lead, with the opposition trailing somewhat behind; however, neither side has secured the majority required to form a government.

The strategy for the Prime Minister’s supporters is now to keep their own coalition intact while beginning to negotiate with individual lawmakers from the opposition camp. As Likud remains the largest party, the mandate to form a government may well be granted to Netanyahu. Should this happen, it is highly likely that negotiations will begin to peel off representatives from the opposition, with the aim of fracturing it.

For Netanyahu’s opponents, meanwhile, the election result can be described as a major failure. Despite the investment of vast resources and the involvement of influential American consultants, the bloc failed to even come close to a majority—leaving them with nothing ahead but internal infighting.
