Actually, there's North America and then there's South America. North America consists of 23 separate countries, including the United States and Canada. South America consists of 12 separate countries and 3 territories (one of which is the Falkland Islands for the UK).

Culturally, N.America & S.America are separate with Central America & the Caribbean Islands, Cuba, etc belonging to the Region of Oceania which stretches to New Zealand and includes the Hawaiian chain. Hence them seeking independence from N.America.

Oceania stretches in the midst of N.America, S.America & us here in Sahul-Australia
Like the Middle-East stretches in the midst of Europe, Asia & Africa.
