Almost Two Million Australians Trapped In Poverty

Inadequate welfare payments leave almost two million Australians trapped in poverty   Sad
The Albanese Government’s shocking mismanagement of the Australian economy has created a brutal reality for millions of Aussies and Aussie families.

Record government spending that has turbocharged inflation and forced the RBA to raise rates may not be filtering into the communities that need it most, with new data showing three in four households reliant on JobSeeker are living in poverty.

The joint research from Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) and UNSW found that this included one in five older singles and one in six children within income support households.

ACOSS chief executive officer Cassandra Goldie said almost 2 million Aussies are destitute.

There were 757,000 kids under-15 living in poverty and children in sole parent households were almost three times more likely to be impoverished than those in coupled households.

ACOSS chief executive officer Cassandra Goldie said that government payments are so low, they’re pushing 1.9 million people into poverty across all kinds of support.

“Almost two million people relying on government support are being pushed past the brink of destitution in one of the wealthiest countries in the world,” Dr Goldie said.

“This is a policy choice and the government can fix it.

The 2026-27 federal budget allocated $18.5b to JobSeeker.

“As interest rate hikes push more people out of paid work, we are urging the government to take direct action both to reduce living costs for low-income households and to strengthen the safety net for those who cannot access paid work,” she said.

The Budget for this financial year projects 37 per cent or $308b of government funds will go towards social services and welfare. About $18b is specifically allocated to just JobSeeker payments.

About 16.4 per cent or $136.9b of the Budget is allocated to health spending, with $24.6b for the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme that subsidises medications.

The research used data for 2022-23 and set the poverty line at $584 a week for a single adult or $1,226 for a couple with two children.

Half of Aussie households on income support are impoverished compared to 8 per cent of households not receiving support.

The report found 49 per cent of supported households were in poverty and UNSW Sydney Scientia Professor Carla Treloar said it shows how far below the poverty line some people live.

“People in households relying on JobSeeker had incomes averaging $331 a week below the poverty line,” Dr Treloar said.

“For Parenting Payment households it was $236 a week.

“These payments leave people a long way from being able to cover the basics. Substantially lifting them would go a long way to closing those gaps,” she said.

The report’s key recommendations include lifting all income support to match the Age Pension and increasing social housing supply.

Hi whiteknight.

We live in a society where you
OFFER VALUE

And rhen people reward you by
GIVING YOU CASH.

but you have to offer value first.

If 2 million people are poor, we need to instruct them in how to offer value and then they can become rich.

Your problem is YOU  think you get rich by taking, by getting.

You have to give before you revieve.

The Australian economy is like an enormous picnic.

And as granny always used to say

YOU HAVE TO BRING SOMETHING TO THE PICNIC OTHER THEN YOUR APPETITE.

the poor will remain poor as long as they continue with their flawed mindset.
A mindset you and your ilk gave them.

No one is going to invite them to the picnic.
The picnic is overflowing with wealth but the price of admission is to not be a selfish narcissistic little worm

This system is circular and flawed because it fails to account for essential but low-paid roles (like teaching or cleaning work) and unpaid care work, which are vital for societal survival but undervalued financially.

Concepts like the gift economy suggest that social bonds, reciprocity, and mutual well-being are more fundamental currencies than fiat, arguing that financial transactions can sometimes exploit or discredit these deeper human connections.

If you are on welfare, you are not supposed to be rich. But you are not exactly trapped either.

A first year teacher in QLD earns $86,600.
Victoria = $92,000
NSW = $92,882
Sth Aust = $84,900
WA = $88,178
NT = $96,180
ACT = $91,396

Early Childhood Teacher QLD = averages $92,500

Teachers are not low paid.

Cleaners & Teachers are chalk & cheese - the 1st is a labourer & the latter a Professional.

Agreed.

The way the system should work is this ( jesus realised this)

When you give, your cup will runners over.
When you take you get nothing.

When you give good vibes at a party, women want to sleep with you.
When you are a creep who needs a girl, they won't.

When you operate a business and serve your customers you get rich.
If you are a creep who is only interested in yourself , customers leave.

So we give to recieve.
And the world is very abundant.

When we recieve cash or sex, we eventually realise that it doesn't sustain our happiness as much as the act of giving.

When you run a great business, you get so hooked on giving, it becomes like a drug.
And eventually you get so much cash and so much love, you start just giving it away for the joy of being in abundance.

People won't take the first step because they live in scarcity.

But I promise you, if you find an area where you can give,  and do it for the joy of giving , whether it's your product, your energy, your cash, you will have arrived at the promised land .

This is the human awakening project.
The energy of life.

Being a little worm, a little parasite, only interested in yourself and what you can get.
Is the energy of death.

And running a business or a successful relationship is the only way to come to this core understanding

Is anyone surprised?

As our politicians wages have risen in a corresponding graph the standard of living has fallen.

By voting for either the Labor or LNP we have the first time in Australia history every new generation is born into a life in Australia worse than the one before it.

Great job Angus,  great job Albo.

Well done?
