"The family of independent MP Helen Haines has confirmed she has been injured in an incident near her Wangaratta office in regional Victoria.

Emergency services responded to calls for assistance on Murphy Street shortly before 4pm.

A witness to the incident told the ABC that a number of locals stepped in to help.

"They were all heroes," the witness said.

In a statement, her family said she was receiving medical treatment.

"This afternoon, our beloved Helen was involved in an incident outside her Wangaratta Electorate Office, and is receiving medical care," the statement said.

"We thank the swift assistance of bystanders and the dedicated health workers who assisted her, and police for their response.

"Our family, and Helen’s staff, will be making no further comment at this time, and ask that their privacy be respected by the public and media.

"Please keep Helen in your thoughts."

Apparently she has lost a leg... serious attack.

Actually, the PM has said this is what it is, hence why he has activated counter terrorism teams, AFP and ASIO according to what he said at the press briefing this evening.

We don't need to politicize this, Greggery. No culture wars here, please.

This was an attempted assassination - fundamentally unAustralian in every way. You'd pity the treatment of such an assassin in jail.

I hope it's a mental health issue. I also hope our politicians can take a breath. The last we want is some kind of heavy security presence or fear.

We want our MPs to chat in the street, have a coffee, catch trains, be one of us.

I've had calls with my local state MP. I'd like our federal MPs to be just as cheery and accessible.

We don't want them here.

I am 3 months into recovery from a reattached finger.
She may have lost a leg and will have many other injuries

I was in hospital for 10 days
She'll be there for over a month I guess
