You can charge any fee you want and call it whatever you want. So long as it is not linked to paying by credit card.

There are still credit card fees. The only thing that has changed is that you always have to pay them now, even if you pay with cash.

Vic roads is a rip off.

I bought a used car about 3 months ago and I was charged stamp duty 4% -
what the hell does that mean?
And I was charged a transfer fee -
it came to a lot of money.

Vic roads is just a building where they tax you for buying a car
when it should be none of their business.
A total rip off - thieves with a smile.

And at the same time our roads have millions of dangerous pot holes - unrepaired.   Roll Eyes

Exactly what that road registration should go towards, the roads we travel on!
Did you see on the news about that biker that was killed because of a pothole. Poor guy, was about our age.
There was a huge show of solidarity with bikers in Melbourne saying the government ‘has blood on their hands’.
As for stamp duty when buying a car, biggest rip off. If a car is an average price of $20,000 that’s $800 more plus transfer fee, on top of having to pay the registration and new service fee.
Think of all the millions vehicles/bikes/trucks in Victoria and the amount of rego with new service fee.
Then there’s trailers and caravans and boats to pay registration also. Not as much as car/truck/bike, but there’s millions of those around too.
The amount of money coming in just with Vic roads must be phenomenal!
Yet it’s all wasted elsewhere! Not the potholes.
Disgraceful and shameful.

All states are doing it - it is indeed a rip off.

Once the stamp duty is paid on a new car that should be the end of it ..... the same with house & land sales.

The Govt should not be able to charge stamp duty on second hand goods.
