The Trump era has really exposed some serious flaws in the way the US government is designed and operates.
There's no way the "Founding Fathers" could have ever imagined someone as corrupt as Trump becoming President. It proves why, if Australia ever becomes a republic, we should not follow the American system and should have a President who is more of a figurehead. Trump has shown just how easily the US system can be corrupted when personal interests outweigh public service.
it id a good reason why we should keep the westminster system we have
When Australia becomes a republic, it is widely planned to keep the Westminster parliamentary system rather than adopt a US-style executive president.
Trump is the living embodiment of why no one should copy the US system. Him and his buddy/handler Putin, of course.
Just so. While we supported a republic during the referendum, there's a lot to lose if we were to elect an executive prez.
In the absence of functional alternatives, our system of government - "responsible government", where a majority of elected representatives govern - has prevailed to be the most effective and fair political models. Australia ranks as 13 on the
democracy index.
New Zealand does even better - number 2 after Norway, also a monarchy. Many of the top countries are, but that's not the point.
The point is political representation. The US prez is meant to serve in an administrative capacity. Congress makes the laws and funds the spending. They're responsible for answering to the voters who elect them.
Mike Johnson's actions turn the system on its head. He's handed the entire legislative branch over to DL. He's no longer even trying. Shutting down Congress will cost a number of Republican reps their seats. They're supposed to be passing legislation on the Epstein files, impeaching Pete Hegseth and stopping the war in Iran. That's their job - carrying out the will of their voters and holding the executive to account.
Mike's treating the job like it's the last few days in Hitler's bunker: ignore the war, keep the Führer happy and die as painless a death as possible.
Needless to say, that's not how the founding fathers planned it. The US is now a flawed democracy, and dropping further down the index by the day.
Aussie Aussie Aussie, no?
