When MMA started it was to find out which fighting arts worked best.

The Wing Chun Kung Fu guys thought they were good so did the Karate and Boxing people.
There was also the question of grapplers vs strikers which is something my father talked about with his martial arts days when i was a little kid.

Ronda Rousey Dan Severn were Olympic class and Royce Gracie showed grapplers will win if fight is a grapple.

Maurice Smith and Holly Holm were champion kickboxers who showed they would win if fight was standing up.

The video with Gene Lebell and the boxer was probably the first real fight the boxer did wear top from Judo uniform which helped gene by giving him something to grab onto.

The fight with Benny the Jet and Dana Goodson did have the ref stepping in and stopping Benny from stomping on Dana which wouldn't happen in the street.
It was the 6th fight those 2 had over 2 days in that tournament loser dropped out winner fought again.

In the early 90s is when UFC started the Gracie Ju Jitsu guys were behind it there were minimal rules no hair pulling or striking groin eyes spine or throat or soccerball kick to head when on ground

There were no weight divisions no rounds and no time limit winner won by KO or submission there were no judges to say who won.

Royce Gracie won several of these early contests he did withdraw from one final claimed to have been hurt yet his opponent was a much larger striker who also had Ju Jitsu experience.I suspect Royce chickened out to keep his undefeated record intact

MMA since then has evolved into weight limits and rounds with time limits the ref will even stand people up again if there isn't enough action.

The fighters have changed as well all the champions are pretty good strikers with grappling skills they have taken the best of what works a combination of Boxing Muay Thai and Ju Jitsu/Judo.

The early 90s UFC you would fight 3-4 people on the same day you didn't know who would be next it would be the winner of another fight.

Today you have a maybe a couple of months to prepare and study other person for possible weakness.

It evolved for TV i prefer the no rounds and no letting people up to improve show. If someone has you down you have to learn to deal with that.

MMA is just fighting to a different set of rules in self defence there are no rules.

With self defence you have to be realistic on what you can achieve i doubt a class once a week will prepare you for a young thug who trains a couple of times a week.
How many times a week are you prepared to train?

Fitter people generally put up more of a fight Rugby league  players are really fit which is why they adapt to boxing very quickly.
Where is your fitness level can you run for 50m-100m-5km?
Do you have a dodgy knee hip or elbow?
If you can't run you're probably not fit enough to do decent kicks.

There are no rules in self defence i have pulled hair twice first time i was being held by 2 people from behind when a 3rd guy tried to king hit me from the front.Got my right hand free while he was pulling his hand back to punch me i threw a punch and missed it went by his ear as i was pulling my hand back i grabbed his hair and pulled his head into my chest so he couldn't punch me we all ended up on the ground. They let me up big mistake from them.
2nd time a guy tried MMA style takedown head low to grab my legs i grabbed his hair stepped to the side and drove his head into a brick wall that was behind me, he didn't want to continue.
When i was a bouncer we all had short hair so it couldn't get pulled we never wore chains around neck as they could be used to choke you.

I see a lot of people trying to teach fancy stuff if someone grabs you. If they grab you they can't punch you with that hand or block a good right to the chin works well.
If you haven't got arm free stomp on their foot/toes really effective with high heels then start hitting them.

If things are really bad poke them in the eye or punch in the throat. If you crush windpipe you could kill them tell the court you aimed for chin and missed.

I don't think any self defence class done once a week will teach much if you're going to do it apply yourself try for at least 3-4 classes a week for a few months which will also improve fitness.
Repitition is what programs you to react in natural reflex without thinking about it

If you're worried about home invaders learn how to use a Hanbo.
Don't turn lights on if they come in at night you have the advantage of knowing home layout.

There was a carjacking in Sydney CBD a few nights ago a woman was pulled out of her car.
If she locked her doors that wouldn't have happened.
It's got me why some people don't just drive off when they stick around while getting attacked in their car.
