Baron, we have this 20 year old Everlast punching bag, it’s so hard!
She worked on her kicks today.
Soon we shop together for that floor to ceiling ball.
And will look at the gloves you mentioned.
I copy and paste what you wrote to her WhatsApp  Smiley

It’s all good advice to keep in mind.

I saw Rebel had a sale stopped in for a look saw these gloves they weren't on special felt pretty good bit more padding than my bag mitts.
They still allow you to grapple and hit with 2 knuckles some say Everlast isn't as durable as it once was.
https://www.rebelsport.com.au/p/everlast-core-everstrike-gloves-M67472001.html?s...

This boxer reviews them said they don't protect fingers or knuckle in middle of finger.
You shouldn't be punching with that part of your fist in self defence you will hurt fingers-hand and be unable to hit them with that hand.
Boxing is great but wearing boxing gloves can give you bad habits that hurt when it comes to bare knuckle self defence.

Since your daughter an ex have Karate experience they might tell you they did push ups on fists using front 2 knuckles in the dojo.
You can spot a serious martial artist by calluses on front 2 knuckles something to look for when sizing someone up in the street

You have to stick to what you know. Twelve years ago, a security guard showed the technique for disarming someone holding a knife.

Security guards aren't a reliable source one was killed at Westfield Bondi his co worker was seriously hurt. 6 were killed and 10 wounded by 1 crazy guy with a knife in 3 minutes before Police shot him.

When i was a 17 year old Brown belt we were going to do a weapons class rubber knives were brought in.
Before the class started a Renshi 4th dan gave me the rubber knife and said lets go.
He threw a front kick at me i stepped back at 45Deg and slashed right down his leg, he threw a punch i stepped back at 45 deg and slashed his arm, he stopped smiled bowed conceded it was over.
Another 4th and 5th dan had a go if they stuck a hand out i slashed it, stuck their leg out i slashed it they both bowed out and conceded i got them real good.
They couldn't touch me i was slashing and stabbing them at will 4th and 5th dans not beginners everyone watching was stunned at what just happened even i was surprised at they would beat me if i was unarmed.
It was a huge reality check for everyone we didn't do knives in that class we used Tonfa Hanbo and Nunchakus.
I should add in NSW Nunchakus and Tonfas are now illegal you need a prohibited weapon permit to legally own them.

If someone is just using a knife to scare or intimidate you without really intending to use it you could get lucky you might get cut or stabbed. if they fight back.
How do you know their intentions?

If someone has a knife/machete and intends to use it you're likely to get slashed or stabbed if they get close enough to you.

If someone was standing in front of me flashing a knife and i had my hands up and could reach their head by extending my arm i would punch them in the head making sure i hit through at least 45 degrees because turning the head knocks people out  straight punches just knock them back.
I would be compliant with them so element of surprise would be a factor. Then i would go to town on them.

My advice is keep clear if someone has a knife.

If i had my Hanbo or Escrima sticks i would have a go.
It would nullify the extra reach they had from knife/machete.
i would stay out of range from blade and make wrist fingers back of hand or part of forearm closest to wrist highest priority target.
You don't have to get close to them you just have to get in range to hit their hand.
When you hit the target they will drop knife have a sore hand/wrist/finger and you will still have your stick so keep hitting them until they can't continue.

I see they NSW Police took guns away from an old couple who were stabbed by a home invader because they shot him when he returned.
The man has nerve damage in his hand from the knife his wife had a punctured lung.
It's a disgrace.

I don't think the staff is good for self defence it's too long limits what you can do in narrow hallway and tight spaces like your kitchen. It's better than nothing wouldn't be my first choice for a stick.

Hanbo is much better it's shorter you can use it one hand both hands even grapple with it's so versatile. If someone grabs it trying to take it from you you can spin it through 180 deg to break their grip.
It's good for beginners doesn't take much time to learn basics which can be very effective.

Lots of stuff on YT for Hanbo lots of flashy BS you don't need as well so stick to what looks simple no need to try things that look complicated.
I spent a week with Masaaki Hatsumi learning Hanbo
the basic simple stuff works best better to perfect that so it comes naturally than confuse yourself with other stuff.

Some single handed strikes not a fan of 8 it's a bit slower if they come in fast at you.

Here is another one not a fan of his outward strike keep it simple you don't have to squat down like he says feet shoulder width apart works well.
Learning to slide hands is very important

Don't have time to go through them to find excellent videos if it looks simple no circular flashy stuff good economy of movement it will be OK for defence.

Some martial arts teach a heap of BS and some good stuff you have to filter it out. You want something that works without thinking too much on how to do it.

Search for
Hanbo
Hanbo strikes
Hanbo jutsu

When I was in my 20s, I was out at the nightclub being obnoxious. I was not drunk or anything. Yet, I was mentally unwell enough the my comments and actions were annoying enough for the security to ask me to leave. As I walked out the front door, the security guard (bouncer) decided to coward shove me in the back. Even though the shove was not too heavy that I held my balance, it was the abusive comments the bouncer made to me had me shove him back and into the glass wall. You can probably understand that it was the "Zodiac" nightclub.

I cannot remember what I said as I left. But, it was something along the lines of "do your job, properly" or something lame like that. I was not in the mood to being used as a prop to let a bouncer enhance his tough guy reputation for other club patrons.

The point being is that even if you do have extensive experience in mixed martial arts or whatever fighting techniques, you are not going to win a fight against someone who can lift your body weight.

They probably had a reason to be doing these exercises. But, for the life of me, the reality is that they would have first tried to disarm you before they refocused on what to do with you next.

As far as I am concerned, you are supposed to reduce the danger of the opponent first before you try to reassess the situation as to whether you need further contact. But, I suppose it was YOUR lesson in martial arts that they were trying to teach you.

Being able to mind read someone is not what is required of anyone. Understanding body language is important, though. If someone is staring at you for a number of moments and then decides to get out their switch blade (or whatever they are called), it is probably a good idea to take a defensive stance.

If it was not for the help of a shopping centre security guard, and the fact that I know how to disarm someone of their knives, I might not be here or have some long-lasting injuries. But the fact that I had the ability to disarm that fellow, the only injury suffered was the perp's ego. As I recall, the perpetrator got a banning from the shopping complex, as I did not want to file charges against him.

As much as I understand about the ordeal the elderly couple that got knife attacked, I don't know about arming themselves with firearms. But, being an experienced marksman, I probably would have used a rifle to threaten an intruder to make his way outside and walk on home. Then again, if an intruder broke into my home, they would probably do a search of my house and take the firearm off me. Given that the house is empty of any lockable storage big enough for me to store a firearm.

How do you disarm someone with a knife/machete when they aren't close enough for you to grab them and the moment you close the gap to get close enough to grab or hit they lash out?

You can't block a machete with your hand/arm numerous cases of people having hands severed by Africans in NSW and Vic.
If your hand gets severed or nasty forearm wound you're now fighting one handed while losing blood in a heap of pain.

It wasn't my lesson 3 4th and 5th Dans got a reality check on what works that day i can tell you it's not much.

Late night at Liverpool station, after my shift at Visy Recycling.
All alone. Heard a big bang from up at the turnstile ticket section.
Then saw a Security guard bolt down the stairs and into the platform 1 room and shut the door.
On my platform saw two young guys bolt down the stairs and then seeing me, they turned at a safe distance to express to someone coming down "Take that big guy on then" .
What approached onto.my platform was a heavily muscled yellow irate dude with a machete. Goaded, he came straight for me!
Upon reaching me, he pulled back on his machete to take his swing.
I had taken a wary few steps back to express I didn't want trouble.
But when he pulled back his arm with the machete, my flinch instinct made me step forward in preparation to grab his head and snap his neck, before his swing came down.
Clearly on amphetamines,  he realised something not to his benefit.
Shouted the f-word. Jumped down onto the tracks, onto platform 1 and began smashing the guard room door window where the guard was hiding. Doing so, the top heavy weight of the machete made him lose the weapon into the guard room. Again he shouted the F-word. Before racing back up the stairs to escape only to be caught be the police that had come.
The police came down to get a statement off the guard and the two young guys were there also bragging to the good looking female cop of how they scared the Yellow guy off.
She gave a quick side glance at me, sitting lazily on the bench seat, winding down from adrenalin, but I didn't flinch a reaction.
With my headphones 🎧  on the entire time.
I just kept listening to my Vivaldi.

Never be afraid to flinch.
Later in life, it again saved my life, when a Turk in Auburn pulled a gun from behind his back to aim at my head.

Strangely,  when a toddler in a pram.
My mother told me of how a crazed guy with a machete had attacked people on our platform, maiming a number just 5 metres away at Petersham station in the 70s.

I have a feeling that everything happens in threes.
Next time, I know I will have to kill... or be killed.
