Self defence.
Sep 16th, 2026 at 10:19pm

I don’t  know if there’s been a topic previously, but it’s an interesting topic and particularly something Jasin mentioned in the boxing thread, that more women in Melbourne are doing self defence now.

Is it any wonder!

This came up and it’s good common sense advice. For everyone!

Sophia i will post stuff related to your daughter in this thread.

The big problem with punching bags and torso is they don't move anyone you fight will move much harder to hit moving target so you don't really develop timing.
If you're not careful you can load up punches which telegraphs them.
One of my friends was undefeated commonwealth kickboxing champ he always said go for speed and the power will come he couldn't explain why.
In physics you have Kinetic energy which is MV^2/2 or Mass times Velocity squared divided by 2.
If you double the mass you nearly double the energy if you double the speed since velocity is squared you get around 4 times the energy.
With static targets like bags/torso etc you can develop bad habits by not making speed a priority.

A floor to ceiling ball moves around front back left right and circles which develops timing and accuracy with a moving target while making striking speed a priority.
It moves a lot faster than any human head and makes a nice sound when you hit it sweetly.

Get one of these

Oh that’s what a floor to ceiling ball is!
I was imagining it was a huge ball from floor to ceiling  Grin

I might surprise her and buy one soon! At least this doesn’t take up a lot of room like the punching bag does.

The best form of self defense is to not be around the trouble or cause it in the first place. If things get rowdy, it is best to get up and relocate.

If i only had one bit of equipment for punching it would be floor to ceiling ball.

With Muay Thai which has leg kicks if you have a punching bag i would go for a long one so it covers knee height to head.

I don't use boxing gloves only worn them a dozen times fighting in the ring.

When training on heavy bag or F to C ball i use bag mitts much lighter smaller thinner you can make proper fist and hit with 2 knuckles.
I have Steeden Ringmaster that are nearly worn out they don't make the ones i have anymore so i would get something like this.
https://www.fighthq.com.au/p/Everlast-1910-Bronx-Pro-Black-Bag-Mitts/DWEQ141598-...

Since you might have a go on bag or ball at some stage hit with 2 knuckles and make sure back of hand and forearm are in a straight line so you don't hurt your wrist.

I think the shortest world title fight in Kickboxing was Australian Stan The Man Longinidis vs Dennis Alexio.
Stan won he broke Alexios leg with first leg kick.
Leg kicks are really good pain can range from bad cork to broken leg.

Very true! Always.
Trouble is, it’s getting really bad in Melbourne and surrounds.
It’s on the news again tonight knife/machete attacks!
There’s going to be more police power to randomly stop and scan persons for knives/metal objects.

But being a fit kick boxer etc is a secret weapon for use only if needed in emergencies.
Like Jasin wrote earlier, if the attacker has a whiff you show you can take care of yourself with courage…it’s enough to make them think twice and run off but they then pick on someone else.

What these troubled young ones need is boot camp.
The judge lets them off with bail.
stupid!

Baron, we have this 20 year old Everlast punching bag, it’s so hard!
She worked on her kicks today.
Soon we shop together for that floor to ceiling ball.
And will look at the gloves you mentioned.
I copy and paste what you wrote to her WhatsApp  Smiley

It’s all good advice to keep in mind.

You have to stick to what you know. Twelve years ago, a security guard showed the technique for disarming someone holding a knife. I did not think much of it at the time until I faced someone looking ready to stab me.

You can watch videos on self-defence techniques and incorporate them into your own defensive actions. If someone is harassing you in public but there is no one else around to help you, you can make an unusual noise and look around from side to side to give the harasser the impression that you are calling friends to assist.

Learn how to block, most of all. If you are not capable of taking a hit and you are not capable of striking back, blocking is the best way to fend someone off. Then try and get out of there.

Yes best to avoid it if you can sometimes you have no choice.

About 15 years ago i was in Glebe got off the bus walked past a Housing commission building there was an old guy on the footpath on his back with blood pissing out of his forehead alrge pool of blood his Maltese terrier beside him on a leash he was saying help me help me.

I thought he fell over and hit his head so i stopped to help him.
This crazy guy comes out of the building and starts swinging at me so i hit him with a left-right-left which drove him back about 6 ft then he runs back at me trying to tackle me. I took him down with a Judo throw called Harai Goshi then pinned him down until police arrived. The other residents in the building were too scared to come out and help because they knew this ugly Mofo was a crazy mentally ill person. They came out when i had taken care of him.

They both lived in housing commission building he cracked the old guy over the head with a brick wanted to kill him.

I went to police station to make a statement as did several residents of that building.

The police typed his name into computer then showed me the screen which displayed this message and nothing else.
CAUTION
WILL ATTACK POLICE
WILL USE WEAPONS

He had 47 entries on his police record for assaults he was mentally ill they couldn't charge him because of this so they would take him to a psychiatric ward who would let him out a couple of weeks later so he could run amok again.

I copped a punch in the head thought my repsonse had to be proportional so i don't get into trouble.
I didn't realise at the time he was mentally ill and didn't care about hurting people and he wouldn't get charged due to mental illness.

All the houso residents said he would have killed the old guy if i didn't help.
The old guy was a decent bloke for a houso he did volunteer work at RPA hospital.
When he got out of hospital his daughter brought him over to my place to thank me.

Sometimes you can't avoid it you have to deal with what is happening, if you can avoid it that is best option.

Whose idea was it to put crazy psychopaths in housing commission so they can terrorise people when they should be locked up in some institution?

He didn't block it properly poor technique.
Muay Thai teaches you how to defend against leg kicks.

Perfect practice makes perfect
The way you train is the way you react (no half hearted stuff).

Leg kick would be first kick for me in back alley i have knocked people off their feet with that some have even run away.
If they can defend against it you know possibly Muay Thai trained so watch out for knees and elbows.
