Climate Disasters Are Making Housing Crisis Worse

Climate disasters are making the housing crisis worse   Sad
2026-09-02
greens.org.au
The Victorian Greens say new figures showing climate disasters are forcing us to effectively “build homes twice” have exposed the staggering cost of Labor’s failure to invest in climate resilience.

The Insurance Council of Australia’s annual report found more than 400,000 claims were lodged to repair or rebuild homes damaged by declared disasters between 2022 and 2026, at an insured cost of $11.3 billion. The cost of building has risen by 30 per cent in five years, outstripping inflation.

Every damaged home displaces a family and draws on the same builders, trades and materials desperately needed to build new housing - driving up construction costs, insurance premiums and pressure on an already stretched housing system.

Despite climate disasters already costing Victoria more than $2.7 billion every year, Labor rejected key recommendations from the Greens-initiated climate resilience inquiry, including a dedicated Resilient Homes Fund and stronger investment in climate adaptation.

The report also warns that the rapid construction of AI data centres will place further pressure on the same stretched building sector. The Greens say Labor’s rush to fast-track Victoria’s data centre boom is making the problem even worse.

The Greens are calling on Labor to urgently implement the climate resilience inquiry’s recommendations, establish a permanent fund to help households protect and adapt their homes, and make fossil fuel corporations pay for it.

Quotes attributable to Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell:

“Labor was handed a blueprint to protect Victorian homes and communities and rejected it. That decision looks more reckless with every fire, flood and repair bill.

“Labor cannot keep fast-tracking coal, gas and data centres while pretending there will be no consequences for our climate, energy system or housing supply.

“Making the biggest polluters pay to climate-proof Victorian homes is cheaper and fairer than forcing families and taxpayers to keep footing an ever-growing repair bill.”

So we've left the cooler, drier Younger Dryas period behind.
Moving towards the warmer, wetter Younger Moistas period.

Me thinks Mother Earth prefers to be warm & wet.
In fact, the Pan-Historic average, is a little warmer than today.
Maybe Mother Earth just had an Orgasm in Nepal.
But because Human infestations (like Crabs) were compromised.
Climate CHANGES, is an evil thing.

While Lefties want a perfect stabilised comfort zone of Air Conditioen temperature control and blame others for not getting their way with this.

Now all they have to do is link it to climate, because weather has done this for eons.  No attribution studies are not science or science driven. They compare one planet with no CO2 against one with CO2... and guess which one "wins". Cool

BTW - Mauna Loa measures CO2 in dry air. And where that occurs is not open to investigation. A bit like carbonic acid really.

So 30 years is climate, supposedly, because that was as good as the records could be back then. Of course for that to fit you have to truncate everything to 30 years and pretend it has never happened before. or it has happened but now it is worse somehow. Wink

Of course the Greens could publish the seminal papers to show that is indeed climate. Cool

OPS  it appears they don't rely on peer-reviewed papers/

From Ai:

"The Australian Greens’ public climate policy page does not appear to provide a bibliography of peer-reviewed papers."

What a load of BS.

Brickworks, timber yards continue to close due to expensive power.

China, burning our coal now has cheap power and we import our steel bricks and tiles from them

Yes , the climate scam is affecting housing

Renewables now provide 9 % of our energy ( NOT ELECTRICITY  BUT ENERGY).

inflation fuel prices debt and interest rates continue  to climb due to dear energy.

So housing becomes less affordable.

Add in 200 000 migrants a year virtually none of which can work in construction. and the problem worsens

That is a very conservative number - especially when the intake has been 1.6 million over the 4 years the Albanese Labor Govt has been in office.

Albos 1st year saw a record 540,000 for 2022 - 2023.(ABS figures)
