Trying to get head office technical support to deal with glitches in our workplace apps is so arduous, given the recalcitrant nature of the Indian support workers. If you have a white-sounding name, they take their f***ing sweet time getting to fix the glitches. Or they don't work at all.

Grin Grin Uber Eats ....who gives a damn?

You're a classic - butt into a convo about offshoring administrative, HR & clerical jobs to India or anywhere else ...

& you recant a yarn about working for Uber Eats & a mobile app?  Grin

Hi white knight.

If Aussie workers can't compete with Indian workers, maybe they should lift their productivity

Maybe - the companies should lift their wages?

Cost of living isn't as high in India. Roll Eyes

Our cost of living is high because we pay too much to non productive people.
90 % of jobs created under albo are government jobs.

We need to " produce things," if we want to increase supply and drop prices.

Instead we manufacture virtually nothing, we rely on farmers and miners to be the only productive  sectors.

What is produced by the masses in Sydney Melbourne and Brisbane that can be sold at Coles?.
A pensioner, a uni student, a health care worker , a child care worker, a ndis worker, a cop, a traffic controller , a hr person,an uber driver., a hairdresser. ...none of them actually produce anything, they are just consumers,
All competing to purchase.
And that puts up prices.

Good call. We need all those auxilliary people but the ratio to productive to auxilliary is getting skewered more and more towards the auxilliaries.

Government IS auxilliary. yet more and more of life is franchised to government. We are at a point where people want the government not merely to help out in dire straits but to take charge of entire aspects of personal an family life that have normally been the domain of individual responsibility.

Qantas eyes cutting 1000 office jobs in major artificial intelligence overhaul
The airline once fined $90m for illegally axing workers is now eyeing up to 1000 more job cuts as it races to embrace artificial intelligence.   Sad

News.com.au
August 4, 2026

Up to 1000 Qantas jobs could be taken offshore to India as the company accelerates the use of artificial intelligence throughout its operations.

The airline giant is consulting with Accenture on Project iQ and how to better use AI.

A decision on whether to outsource or cut roles in marketing, finance, human resources and other back-office jobs is expected later in the year.

A Qantas spokesperson told NewsWire the airline was “looking at ways to accelerate the use of technology and AI to help us modernise the way we work and deliver better outcomes for our customers and our people”.

“We have been exploring partnerships that have the capability to support us and are in early stage discussions with Accenture, but no formal agreement is in place and no decisions have been made,” they said.

In February, Qantas announced a flat first-half result, with statutory profit after tax of $925m, up $2m from the same time last year.

The airline will announce its full-year results in late August.

Qantas pointed to its recent job hires, including thousands of operational roles in Australia in the past few years, and a new technology hub in Adelaide, which will add 400 roles.

Australian Services Union assistant national secretary Scott Cowan said Tuesday’s reports were of huge concern and his organisation would fight for every job.

The Australian Services Union is demanding talks with Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson.

“What’s been reported today is that the airline is considering a proposal by Accenture, that’s not in dispute. What matters is that Qantas has informed that there is no plan to offshore any Australian jobs, and we demand the airline stay true to these commitments,” he said.

“If that commitment from Qantas turns out to be worthless, it won’t just be a broken promise to ASU. It will be a deep breach of trust with the Australian public who have stuck by this airline through everything it has put them through.”

The ASU said this wasn’t first time the union had to seek assurances from Qantas over its use of AI to justify axing staff.

“We are seeking an urgent meeting with Vanessa Hudson to ensure that this rapid AI push is used to support and augment our highly skilled workforce rather than being used as a hi-tech smokescreen for further job slashing and a reduced customer experience,” Mr Cowan said.

According to the ASU, Qantas has a documented history of outsourcing and offshoring Australian jobs.   Sad

Qantas previously outsourced ground-handling operations during the Covid-19 pandemic, a move later ruled illegal by Australian courts, resulting in a $90m penalty.

This impacted 1800 to 2000 workers who were made redundant and replaced by a third-party external supplier.   Sad

I don't know if it is a google maps glitch that everyone has to put up with. Or if the people working head office need to get their act together. But there does not seem to be much in terms of getting things fixed for an app.

The bigger picture here is that the administration team, consisting mainly of Indian workers, don't give a damn about people in Australia trying to do their jobs. Whether you are working for Coles or Uber Eats, if the technical, finanacial, or other administrative team does not care about the viability of the organisation, the company goes belly up.

I got out of one place of employment before the company went belly up 18 months later. The reason for the collapse? The head office did not care about the worker satisfaction with their jobs.

Strange, when there are so many ‘’white sounding names’’ in India, such as Campbell.

Yeah, and then the computer hacker gets into the call centre's network and brings up "Campbell's" name to be "Kumar". And he does not live in Scotland.

There are hundreds of thousands of people in India who have European names.

Goa, Kanatica and Mangalore particularly have many Portuguese names.

Fernandes, D'Souza, Rodrigues, Pereira, Da Silva, Gonsalves, Gonçalo, Cardoso, Pinto, Dias, Diogo, Lobo, DaCosta, Almeida, Baretto and that’s only a small part.
Edit, I forgot Vas, the surname of some very good friends.

French names abound in what was formerly Pondicherry and British names are found all over the country, but particularly in the bigger cities such as Mumbai and Delhi.

Just as easily, an Indian can assume some Western name to try and insult some Westerner about their commitment to resolving their problems.

Have you ever tried to deal with say the Indian or asian or Islander phone support outsourcers, its a horrible ineficient product. It has nothing to do with productivity it is about 3rd world wages and not caring about service quality or productivity.

I once got a call from one of these fake call centres that the person claimed to be working from a building that I worked in. (not relivant just a funny coincidence).

Apparently the first 15 floors were in Australia and the 16th was located in India.
