By the 2050s, their modelling shows, snowpack drought like the states west of the Continental Divide experienced this past winter will be happening more than three of every 10 years, and nearly nine of every 10 years by the 2090s.

I remember 6 months ago, if it got above 35°C, we would go to the shopping centre or the movies to take advantage of the air conditioning. If any fires flared up, we would just piss on it.

I'd believe that - you're usually full of piss.  Grin

And if we would piss on it with our alcoholic bladders, we might light up a further grass fire.

South Korea has hottest day on record amid extreme weather globally

Scientists say the climate crisis driven by human activity is making heatwaves more frequent.

South Korea has recorded its highest temperature since national weather records began more than a century ago, as an intense heatwave grips the country, the latest in a year of climate extremes that have caused droughts, wildfires, floods and powerful storms around the globe.

The southeastern city of Yangsan reached 42.5 degrees Celsius (108.5F) at 1:26pm local time (04:26 GMT) on Sunday, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). It was the fifth consecutive day that temperatures in Yangsan exceeded 40C (104F).

From Al-Jazeera -

"KMA data shows the average annual number of heatwave days has more than doubled over the past five years to 19, compared with an average of eight days in the 1970s."

So it is warmer than the 1970's when we had the global cooling scare. Cool

In 1970, the estimated baseline global average surface temperature was approximately 13.9°C to 14.0°C (57°F to 58°F). Relative to the 1951–1980 climatological baseline mean, the global temperature anomaly for the year 1970 hovered near 0.0°C (roughly −0.02°C to −0.05°C), sitting at the end of a brief mid-century cooling plateau.

And? Estimated temperatures? What were the error bars on these estimations?

Seeing as the models still don't do clouds well the bar bars have to be large. And they get larger the further you go back in time.

Now tell us what you know about the intensive properties of temperature.  Roll Eyes

Climate adaptation at its limits.

A climate scientist says Earth is "passing the limits of adaptation" when it comes to withstanding the effects of climate change.

JOHAN ROCKSTROM: Ninety percent of the heat caused by our fossil fuel burning is not in the atmosphere causing the temperature rise, which has led us to the climate crisis we see today - it's in the ocean. Fifty percent of the carbon dioxide from the greenhouse gases we add is not in the atmosphere trapping heat. It's actually stored, half of it in the ocean and half of it on land. So a healthy planet has this extraordinary biogeophysical capacity to buffer and dampen, basically cool the planet. We're seeing, unfortunately, increasing indicators of our planet losing this capacity. Not that we've crossed the tipping point, but forest systems are getting weaker and no longer able to take up as much carbon. The ocean is warming faster than we had expected. Ice is melting faster than we had expected. This is a stress response of a planet that is trying to do everything it can to buffer and dampen change. And when we come closer to the end of this capacity, then of course, the risk is very high that the impacts hit back even harder on our societies.

Joan Rockstrom from the "ever reliable" (sarc), Potsdam Institute. Wink

So he is an "expert" on climate sustainability issues. So which things are failing due to climate?

Climate change is causing widespread failures across environmental, agricultural, health, and economic systems.

Ecosystems and Biodiversity: Coral reefs are suffering mass bleaching and collapse, while species extinction rates have accelerated 1,000 times faster than historical norms.  Forests are being decimated by pests like bark beetles, and one million species are at risk of extinction.

Agriculture and Food Security: Major crops including corn, wheat, rice, coffee, and bananas are facing failure due to heat stress, drought, and altered growing seasons.  This leads to reduced yields, livestock losses, and heightened global hunger and malnutrition.

Human Health and Infrastructure: Health systems are failing to cope with increased mortality from heatwaves, malaria, and vector-borne diseases.  Extreme weather events like floods and wildfires are destroying homes, displacing millions, and causing billions in economic damages.

Water and Coastal Stability: Glaciers and polar ice sheets are melting rapidly, driving sea-level rise that threatens coastal cities and causes saltwater intrusion into freshwater supplies.  Droughts are depleting aquifers and reducing the availability of safe drinking water.

So tell us where this bleaching has killed coral reefs. The corals came into being the warmest periods in Earth's history, warmer than now. Are you telling us they are going soft like white people?

Pine bark beetles are bad. They impact forests that have not been properly managed. Fire kills the pine bark beetle.

Which millions of species? How many species have been made extinct in the last 30 years?

Not according to the FAO, harvests are generally increasing, although all crops are subject to periodical declines due to drought etc. it has always been that way, and unless you have plans for multi-hundred acre greenhouses, always will. Cool

Heatwave deaths may have increased, of course the other side of the coin is cold deaths have dropped by more than the heat deaths. Cool

What about malaria? It was called the Ague in Ancient Britain, so it is not a heat related condition. Cool

Extreme weather events are just that... weather - NOT climate. And of course as people grow richer they own more. It costs more to replace, nothing to do with climate or weather. Cool

So how many millimeters has the ocean risen in the last 30 years? If the glaciers and polar ice is melting rapidly perhaps you can show that.

Which cities are threatened?

With references.

Wrong. Droughts are not reducing the availability of safe drinking water, overuse is. Something completely different. Cool
