China to dump unsafe EV cars in Australia -

with doors you can't open in an emergency.

As China bans new cars with unsafe doors,
Australia risks becoming a ‘dumping’ ground.

Published: July 27, 2026 6.04am AEST

Australia risks becoming a “dumping” ground for electric cars following the introduction of new Chinese safety rules from next year, a report for Australian car dealers has warned.

Hidden or retractable door handles have become a common feature of many modern electric cars, popularised by Tesla. Last year, China Daily reported around 60% of China’s 100 bestselling “new-energy vehicles” – electric vehicles (EVs), hybrids or cars powered by fuel cells – had concealed handles.

From January 1 next year, China is phasing in a world-first ban on hidden or retractable electric car door handles.

All new cars sold in China will need handles that can be manually opened in an emergency, even when a car has lost power. The US is currently considering a similar move.

China’s ban followed a series of sometimes fatal incidents, where people were trapped inside burning, flooded or frozen cars, with doors unable to be opened from the outside.

Meanwhile, it appears increasingly likely that from mid-next year, China could also force carmakers to reintroduce more physical buttons and levers back into new cars. Large touchscreens without physical controls have been shown to be dangerously distracting for drivers.

They are illegal in China and cost too much to retrofit
so we'll take them -
and people will be burnt alive or drowned inside them -
death traps.
Will the ADR stop them.

Tonight  ABC 20 full HD.

Foreign Correspondent China's EV Revolution

In China an electric revolution is taking place.
Across the country, electric cars we might consider luxury are now standard issue.
China invested billions to produce smarter and cheaper EVs, dominating the global market.

Just watched the ABC show -

in China, massage seats in cars are a standard feature not a luxury feature as in the West -

they are way ahead of us.

Australians will end up buying them, especially if the EVs are at a bargain price.

You will see the cars out and about, despite your preference.

Don't forget all your personal details you enter into your car via phone, etc. Goes back to China Data Centres. They will be scamming the elderly drivers in Australia before you know it.

Did you know that with many cars today you don't even get a mechanical key
and a key ignition lock?
So - if you are somewhere far from home and the battery fails in your FOB key
you are stuffed - you can't even open the door.
I hate these new cars - I'm sticking with older cars.
People should refuse to buy the new cars.

In this video we go into the Smart Key system in modern Toyota and Lexus vehicles. We start with how the system works, then I share with you some practical information that every Toyota and Lexus owner will find useful to make better use of your push button start vehicle.

There are too many gadgets and gimmicks today – with cars it’s getting worse.
People need to buy a car – not a gimmick.
People should have their eyes on the road and not be distracted.
I think with keys the manufacturers try to save money –
a mechanical ignition switch costs 100s of dollars to make –
It’s cheaper to make a button and use a $5 microcontroller to start a car.
That argument gets a little degraded when they want to charge $50K and more for a new car
full of gimmicks most people will never need or use.

I expect the opposite will happen. The car companies have plenty of time to prepare. So they will probably stop making anything with hidden handles altogether.

Yes and I hope they return to mechanical ignition switches.
