We are mystified.
Our house is 37 years old.
We have huge laminated glass windows.
Couple mornings ago it looked like a stone chip and huge crack appeared.
And there were 2 further parallel cracks on their own close by.

No grass was mowed. So it can’t be that.
Maybe a large bird in flight?
We have tall bushy plants near it so that wouldn’t stopped any direct hits of birds.
There’s nothing in the ground to give any clues.
There seems to be movement of one pane moving slightly away from adjoining glass.
Was there some mysterious earth tremor or something?
We had the house treated against white ants 4 years ago.

Darn expensive piece of window to replace! Our insurance excess I chose $5,000 to keep premiums lower.
There’s no answer as to how this mystery crack appeared, so if I call a glazier would they know?

Another oddity happened to our Gold Coast house when daughter was living there. The house is about 30 years old. She was visiting us in Vic then when she went back the sliding door glass had blown inwards like a big animal bounced into it.
With the block less than 400msq and houses and fencing all around … how did that happen we just never found out.

Anyone had weird glass experiences like this?

Perhaps stresses had built up in the glass over years. Eventually the stress overcame the strength of the glass?

Ah, vaguely remember glass is a liquid and flows (very slowly) so the top gets thinner and the bottom gets thicker.

Some pointers…it is the window nearest entry door.
It is the window facing north.
I’m thinking it must be stress fractures.
It was very cold overnight and frosty morning and then the sun shone and it was a warmer clear sky day (we are mid winter here).
Just trying to work it out.
Glad it’s laminated so the inside glass is still intact and holding it together.

I had heard of exploding glass tables just in the last few years and it was blamed on cheap Chinese manufactured glass.
So these glass windows in houses over 35 years old must be another reason/s.

Still can’t get over the inward exploding sliding door glass on GC house.

I will get a glazier that’s been in business for decades to answer some queries soon.
