12:00 pm or Noon?

Why do people use 12:00 pm when the actual time meant is Noon?

I have no idea.

However, I do have a sneaking suspicion this thread may end up going on for as long (or longer) than your Monorail thread earlier this year.  Grin

Fair enough; what inspired the question was an appointment card from the local doctor, the receptionist wrote ‘12pm’, which was obviously not intended as they close at 4:00 pm.

Isn't the real meaning of noon is when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. Time zones and daylight savings puts noon and 12:00 pm out of calibration.

It should have read 12 noon or 12.01 pm - and that comes before 4pm. Post meridiem Tongue

It's like those using the 24 hr clock saying 24.00 hundred hrs for midnight.

There's no such time.

Midnight doesn't register as 24.00hrs  in systems that use it.

It goes 23.59 hrs to 00.01 hrs.

Gnads is wrong:

On a 24-hour clock, when the time transitions from 23:59, the day is over.

The clock then rolls over to 00:00 to start a brand new day, and the very next minute is 00:01.

The sequence runs as follows:23:59 (the final minute of the day)00:00

(midnight, the beginning of the next day)00:01 (the first minute of the next day)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24-hour_clock

The modern 24-hour clock is the convention of timekeeping in which the day runs from midnight to midnight and is divided into 24 hours. This is indicated by the hours (and minutes) passed since midnight, from 00(:00) to 23(:59), with 24(:00) as an option to indicate the end of the day. This system, as opposed to the 12-hour clock, is the most commonly used time notation in the world today,[A] and is used by the international standard ISO 8601.[1]

12pm is noon.

12:00pm is midnight, 12 hours post meridiem.

12pm is noon.
  - it stands for post meridiem.

Similarly, the counterpart to noon is 12 a.m., which stands for ante meridiem (meaning "before midday") and is used for midnight. Because the clock resets exactly at the meridian (midday), many people avoid 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. altogether to prevent confusion, preferring to just use "midnight" or "noon"

How can 12 hours after noon be noon, not logical.
