When our Civilisation finally collapses, the peasants will need some way to get to town so good for horses, and something to eat... so deer and pigs are not such a bad thing. The damage you speak of is localised and rare and nature repairs itself well..... it's not as if they are trampling the earth into dust or something..

Humans definitely cause far more damage than any wild animal.

Did you see the video made by a Snowies bloke - horse rider - where the track made by horses through the bush had acted as a fire break?  Burnt black on one side - green on the other. And the track was only a couple of feet wide..

Very low intensity fire.

Complex issue grap.

I don't support gut shooting a horse and letting it die over 3 days as it's starving foal stands next to it.

But horses do damage fragile ecosystems.

Feral donkeys and camels in the centre of australia would also need attention.

But it should be humane

I don't think there's an example of wild horses actually destroying a fragile environment... the Planet Of The Apes scarecrows called wind generators and the trails they need to even exist is destroying many thousands of hectares of natural environment.

Got me eye on a property - no money though - near the Range up northern NSW there - plan is for a Sanctuary for brumbies and wildlife, and veterans in trouble and good people in trouble... hour or two from your holding...

Wild horses, camels and donkeys have one important thing in common, they drink water and in drought conditions they travel to get a drink, they will drink small water holes dry and the small native animals that live around there, and who can’t travel long distances, die as a consequence.
Wild horses are a feral introduced pest and should not only be culled but exterminated.
The do gooders never gave a damn about the killing of rabbits by mixo and the prolonged suffering before death or the rare recovery from it.

Irrelevant clap trap.

Camels have one advantage over horses & donkeys - they can go without water for much longer.

That's why camels survive where horses & donkeys don't.

Unlike horses & donkeys Camels are soft footed ungulates.

You of all people should know that. Roll Eyes

Irrelevant clap trap?
What has the hooves got to do with drinking the water holes dry?
And why should one feral animal that does damage be treated differently to another?
While we’re at it, feral deer should also be eradicated and not protected.

I never mentioned deer - but unlike horses, donkeys & camels are not really domesticated animals - they remain wild, highly strung animals.

Well low intensity fires(slow/cold burns) are what you want  -

not unstoppable wild fires.

Haven't you heard all the talk about "Aboriginals" being the only ones with that knowledge?

Never mind that Australian farmers/graziers have been doing them for over 200 years.

As I said, very low intensity fire, I’ve seen stubble fires blown across tarred two lane roads; a hell of a lot depends on the wind, burning animals etc., only sheer luck would make a horse trail appear to have acted as a fire break.
Then there’s the ‘’Firehawks’’ to contend with, birds of prey that deliberately spread bush fires, or even start them, for their own benefit.

On Facebook - but it's playing up again:-

"Today was a really positive day for the brumbies, and we just wanted to thank everyone who came along and showed their support.
We started the day with a rally outside NSW Parliament before heading inside for the Legislative Assembly debate.  It was wonderful to see so many people there.   The public gallery was completely full.
The petition has now been debated by the Legislative Assembly and will move on to the Legislative Council in September, where it will be debated in more detail.
This is an important step forward, but it doesn't mean the fight is over.
Sadly, the aerial cull has not been stopped and is expected to recommence in November.
Ground shooting is continuing, and the emergency injunction before the Land and Environment Court is still being processed.  We will keep everyone updated as that progresses.
Today reminded us that there are so many compassionate people who care deeply about these beautiful brumbies. Every person who attended the rally, sat in the gallery, signed a petition, wrote to their MP or simply shared information has helped bring it to this point."

What about some concern for the poor bloody rabbits?

Myxomatosis brings on a horrible death

‘’’Myxomatosis is a severe, usually fatal viral disease caused by the myxoma virus, affecting European rabbits. It is spread by biting insects like mosquitoes and fleas, or via direct contact. The disease causes rapid swelling, discharge around the eyes and face, and high mortality, typically killing infected domestic rabbits within 10 to 14 days.’’

Apparently all feral pests are not accorded the same degree of compassion.

Farmer/Graziers/recreational horse riders animals break their legs in rabbit holes .....

so stuff the rabbits

Quote:
Feral rabbits cause an estimated AUD $200 million to $217 million in agricultural production losses each year

So tens of billions since 1859 .... as well as land degradation & erosion.

That’s not the point, one of the biggest objections to brumby culling is cruelty so why is such absolute cruelty allowed in the eradication of rabbits?

Seems a mite hypocritical.

If one person caused the same level of cruelty to one rabbit there would be wide contempt and prosecution at law.

Machine gun Brumbies.
Throw grenades at em, disguised as Kiwifruit 🥝.
Slaughter them all!
Kill em like Cane Toads, Rabbits, Fire Ants, feral Pigs, Camels, Cacti, Cats & Dogs.
Macerate em. Decimate em. Butcher em.

Because of the magnitude of the rabbit population - the logistics to do it any other way would not be possible - as well as cost. So biological controls were the go.

Do you have the same concern for rats & mice?

Pet rabbits are not the wild variety.

It is illegal to keep any kind of rabbit in QLD.

A good law - saves dealing with pet hoarder people over animal cruelty incidents.
