Tax Coal, Oil, Gas For Climate-Related Disasters
Jun 22nd, 2026 at 6:29pm

The motion, put forward by the City of Sydney and backed by the Australian Local Government Association Board, will go to a vote at the ALGA National General Assembly from 23 to 25 June. It calls on the Federal Government to establish a Parliamentary inquiry into levies and taxes on coal, oil and gas corporations to help fund the cost of climate-related disasters.

The push comes as Australia’s 537 councils face mounting climate costs, with the insured cost of climate-related disasters now twelve times higher than two decades ago, while local government revenue has only grown three-fold in the same period.

Other option, is to make rate payers pay for the climate collapse.

The insured cost have gone up. So has inflation, the GDP. So have these "climate-related disasters" also gone up? And then of course less than 30 years is weather. What about the long term trends?

I realise BoM don't want to go back to the 1880's with their records, ostensibly because of no Stevenson Screens, but we can calculate the cooling effect of the old size screen as well as the cooling effect of the smaller screen, which doesn't cool as much. But we mustn't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Wink

BTW - last time I looked Sydney City Council was in NSW, so a state issue. Roll Eyes

Another try and another fail. Why don't you show your superior knowledge and give explicit examples of these examples of "false" data? Wink
