Australia could try a different path. Don't cull. Allow natural immunity to develop.

So perhaps not in Oz. Roll Eyes

It has the potential of wiping out our black swan population.

Letter in today's The West Australian.

Yes, that is an excellent idea. And, it would be money well spent by the WA Government instead of spending it on racetracks, ferries and subsidised airfares for an Italian football festival which is already being "financially underpinned" by WA taxpayers.

(Someone was asking the other day about having subsidised airfares for WA football fans flying to Melbourne if the Dockers make the Grand Final. Yeah, I'd like to see that).  Roll Eyes

Now found in South Australia as well.

Bird flu has spread to two Australian states. Here’s how it could accelerate our extinction crisis

Quote:
The deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has now been found in a second state, South Australia, after earlier being identified in Western Australia.

Authorities have confirmed three seabirds have died of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus. It is too early to know if H5N1 has spread beyond these animals to other wildlife or livestock in Australia. But it appears very much a matter of when, not if, this happens.

Globally, H5N1 has already devastated wildlife populations. In Australia, this deadly virus could greatly disrupt ecosystems and push our most threatened species even closer to extinction.

Doesn't look good, I have a feeling this is going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible to stop now.

You should get down to the Fairy Penguins and make sure they are OK. Give 'em a kiss for me.

I guess we'll just have to 'live with the virus' (bird flu) just like we've had to live (and die) with Covid for the past 4 or 5 years.

So, in other words, all the vulnerable will die from a disease when they were 99% likely to have died from something that year. And the remainder will recover and be immune from this bird flu in the coming years...

Uhuh, gotcha.

Don't be so phucken dismissive about something that could wreck our primary industries.
