Forgot about this thread,
I’ve lived among Sikhs in India and in Amritsar in particular and never felt safer, men and occasionally women going about fully armed with visible swords and daggers/knives.
From Google.
‘’ Low Rates of Conventional Violent Crime in PunjabData compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) routinely indicates that Punjab's major urban centers are structurally safer than neighboring regions like Haryana or Delhi. Cities such as Amritsar maintain rare occurrences of random violent crime against the general public or travelers.’’
Might have something to do with the freedom to defend oneself.
In Australia things are a little different, self defennce is frowned upon and having the means is mostly an offence at law.
‘’ Australian crime statistics and academic research do not single out the Sikh community as a distinct demographic group with high rates of general criminal offending. Instead, official data and public reporting indicate that Sikhs in Australia—numbering over 100,000—are widely recognized as a law-abiding, hardworking diaspora. Discussions regarding Sikhs and crime in Australia typically focus on two primary contexts: victimization and hate crimes directed at Sikhs, or internal community pressures (such as domestic/family violence or localized temple governance disputes) that occasionally draw law enforcement attention.’’
