I think the Moon has had an impact on our consciousness.

Arrrgh - they simply chose the simple life to stay away from the evils of civilisation....  now that civilisation has over-run them and they wear Akubras and cowboy boots and Wharte Man clothes, drave Wharte Man cars, and eat out of the communal pot at Macca's..

A civilisation.... gone with the mind...

Funny how high teched civilised people can't wait for their holidays to leave their cities, get their camping gear and go do some Hunting & Gathering.

I laugh at Pascoe & his push that Aborigines were Farmers  away from the H&G lifestyle.
When Noah Harari proved that H&G lifestyle was the more time efficient and less laborious of the two.

There is nothing wrong with living within the constraints of what is there for you to use - infant and adult mortality may have been high, but that was the case everywhere in 1787 ... and populations overall worldwide didn't expand at any great rate or live much longer depending on where you lived.

There is no real comparison in terms of what any culture could produce for its people generally... and really, all were pretty much on the same level of survival... would you rather live in pestilent London or on the mountains here, or fight occasionally with your neighbours or engage in European wars involving hundreds of thousands?

Each culture had one thing in common - survival of the race....

Just remember I'm not always right - I write things down off the top of my head.... not always 100% on the money, but the gist is there...

"There is no real comparison in terms of what any culture could produce for its people generally"
... this is poorly written... the gist is that all populations remained near terminal for the poorest - the majority - people still died early etc..  Comparing the industrialising West and Aboriginal life is not the same in the sense of 'producing' goods that allegedly created national wealth, though the Anglican Kings syndrome ensured that most went to the big boys anyway...

As for the women - you don't think Mary Shelley got to travel and stay in a castle and write books on a dare through being of poor stock, do you?

Point:-  The 'African King' is matched in Wharte society by the 'Anglican King' or the 'European King' in Wharte society .......

I got the gist of what you said and I agree.
The life expectancy of a civilised person back then was no different to a still roaming H&G somewhere else.
Even today, I'm sure the Khoi & San live as long as what filthy Monk would.  Cheesy

Now that I think about all these Cave paintings around the world.
They remind me of Truck Stops.  Grin
