Not necessarily. Shop around. A 20% deposit means you pay less on repayments, Some start at 5%.

Really?

The first place I bought had a 20% deposit -
the 2nd place an 80% deposit -
the 3rd place I bought outright - no loan needed.     Smiley

But doesn't the Govt. give some kind of guarantee on that 5% deposit option
if it all goes belly up?

examples:

People can lose their job,
they can become ill and can't work,
their marriage can break up,
they can die in a car accident -

things happen.

Yes they do. I had a 5% deposit in Darwin in 2000, due to my being a government employee. I was almost broke after the divorce.  It was not due to the current 5% loans.
