Trump Channels the Ghost of Nixon

From thrashing wildly between pale imitations of Reagan and Carter, Trump finally settles on invoking on himself the self-inflicted tragedies of Johnson and Nixon.

He long since achieved the title of being as corrupt as Nixon, without the biting intelligence, and now he's brought down on himself, the American people and the world, a Johnsonian-Nixonian Vietnam-style war.

As his administration fractures - showing early signs of collapse, his own fate is careening towards that of Nixon's... but without the sense of personal shame that Nixon felt about enduring probable impeachment and conviction, that drove him to resign...

But Trump will not resign... he will likely lock himself in the Oval Office and claim he is being deposed in a coup.

The amount of corruption coming from the Trump administration makes the Watergate scandal look about as bad as a parking ticket in comparison. Trump does far worse things on almost a daily basis.

The amount of corruption coming from the Trump administration makes the Watergate scandal look about as bad as a parking ticket in comparison.

Trump does far worse things on almost a daily basis.

Indeed, the only other leaders who have been more corrupt than Trump have been actual dictators who had overthrown the democratically elected government of the day.

Bone spurs aside, there are very strong personality parallels between Johnson and Trump...

Both have/had raging egos showing signs of malignant narcissism.

Both were raging letches, bordering on criminal, with women they were attracted to.

Both were/are as openly as crass as they could get away with, to maximally humiliate and belittle those around him who were forced to defend him or lose their job.

Both were obsessed with their name, feeling the need to label everything they could with it.

Johnson had all his direct relatives named with the initials LBJ.

He ensured his wife, Lady Bird Johnson (born Claudia Alta Taylor), and both daughters, Lynda Bird and Luci Baines, shared the initials.

Even his beagle was named Little Beagle Johnson.

He famously had his initials placed on everything he could.

Johnson was convinced he could wrap up the Vietnam War within a year and was obsessed with making Kennedy (whom he hated) look like a pathetic loser over the war.

If his administration can't end the war with Iran, no matter how many threats and the amount of firepower deployed, Trump will complete his Johnsonian phase and quickly descend into the Nixonian phase - a deflective escalation to embroil other Iran-allied nations, and then an excruciating winding down, replete with fraudulent 'peace efforts' calculated to try to extract a victory out of probable defeat.
