LOS ANGELES, CA — A comedian who is paid millions of dollars annually to make people laugh appeared on a podcast to explain to the American people that it is not his job to be funny.
Jimmy Kimmel, whose job title is "host of a late-night comedy show," explained to listeners that he is not paid to do comedy.
"I don't know where people get the idea that comedy shows are supposed to be funny," said Kimmel to podcast host Michelle Obama. "People have this weird misconception that because I receive a salary to be a comedian, that somehow it's my job to make people laugh. Then, when I spend the entire show screaming and weeping, they say, 'Hey! You're not doing your job!' It's absurd."
Kimmel assured listeners that it's not his job as a comedian to make people laugh, just like it's not a plumber's job to fix a toilet. "If I pay a plumber to come fix my sink, it's not the plumber's job to fix my sink," explained Kimmel. "What if he wants to go bowling, or just cry on my couch for a while? That's his prerogative."
At publishing time, the band for Kimmel's late-night show had decided it was no longer their job to play music.
