Trump says he agrees to suspend bombing of Iran for two weeks

WASHINGTON, April 7 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he has agreed to suspend the bombing of Iran for two weeks while accepting a ‌14-day truce proposal from mediators in the Iran war.
Trump said he spoke to leaders in Pakistan, which has been a mediator between Washington and Tehran and which had sought a two-week ceasefire.

"Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested ⁠that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," Trump wrote on social media.
"This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE," Trump said.

Trump said the U.S. has received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he called a "workable basis ‌on ⁠which to negotiate."
Trump said in his post that nearly all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the U.S. and Iran and the two-week period will allow a deal to be finalized.
Trump, who has offered shifting goals ⁠and timelines for the war, reiterated that he felt Washington's objectives had been achieved.

The Iran war began when the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. Tehran responded ⁠with its own strikes on Israel and Gulf states with U.S. bases. The war has shaken global markets and raised oil prices.
U.S.-Israeli strikes in Iran and ⁠Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed thousands and displaced millions. Trump warned earlier on Tuesday that "a whole civilization will die tonight" if Iran did not make a deal.

• Strait of Hormuz: Iran’s military will coordinate passage of vessels through the critical Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire, Iran’s foreign minister said. Trump said reopening the strait was a key condition of the ceasefire deal.

• What happens next? Pakistan’s prime minister has invited delegations from both Iran and the US to Islamabad for talks on Friday. Earlier Tuesday, Pakistan proposed the two-week ceasefire to allow for diplomacy.

Iran and Oman plan to charge transit fees for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz during the two-week ceasefire, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency.

The funds will be earmarked for reconstruction, Tasnim reported.

CNN has asked Oman’s foreign ministry for comment.

The strait has been effectively closed since the war began, with maritime tracking data showing that only about 5% of the pre-war volume of shipping is getting through. Some tankers have been able to pass through; for instance, Pakistan and India have negotiated with Iran for guaranteed passage of some of their flagged vessels.

Iran has reportedly been charging up to $2 million per vessel for passage trough Hormuz. It’s unclear if any ship operators have paid the fee.

as ‘a victory for the United States’

The White House asserts that the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran is a victory for Washington.

“This is a victory for the United States that President Trump and our incredible military made happen,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says in a statement.

“From the very beginning of Operation Epic Fury, President Trump estimated this would be a 4-6 week operation,” she says. “Thanks to the unbelievable capabilities of our warriors, we have achieved and exceeded our core military objectives in 38 days.”

“The success of our military created maximum leverage, allowing President Trump and the team to engage in tough negotiations that have now created an opening for a diplomatic solution and long-term peace,” Leavitt adds.

“Additionally, President Trump got the Strait of Hormuz reopened,” she says.

The channel was open before the war started, though, and Iran now says safe passage must be coordinated with its forces.

“Never underestimate President Trump’s ability to successfully advance America’s interests and broker peace,” Leavitt says.
