Footnote:-  I doubt it was my cousin-in-law who was prosecuting that case of Ben's - last I heard he was mighty sick - that's what the DPP does to you.  Toxic environment.... Department for Perverting Proceedings in any way....

Anyway - Ben is free... probably grabbing a decent coffee...

The prosec said he was well advanced with organising to leave the country - is there a single soul among us who would blame him?  The entire joint is being 'owned' in countless ways by his - and your - enemies - past, present and future.

After all these years of this tripe, even I, who firmly oppose juvenile feminists and their words of war and violence, and try to steer them into discussion and thought - am beginning to view the world in blacks and whites.   Cool

I don't know much about this guy, and like I've said before, as far as I'm concerned he's innocent until/if proven guilty.

I'm gonna wait and see what happens in the trial.

However, many people have already made up their mind and are certain he's innocent.

There are suggestions that the government is out to get him.

My question is: why - what's in it for them to pursue & convict an "innocent" man?

Australia's James Glissan has the best take on Ben Roberts-Smith and his arrest.

Thanks for that.

He doesn't answer my question though.

My question is: why - what's in it for them to pursue & convict an "innocent" man and national hero?

Glissan explains why, as a lawyer, he cannot comment on the case directly.

I'd bet the government was forced into this by, as yet unpublished, evidence or threat of exposure... i.e. something the government is aware of that confirms his likely culpability... the risk being that if exposed, where the government did nothing, it will be embroiled in accusations of perverting the course of justice - hence the very public and unnecessary arrest process... the source could even be at the state-actor level.

Not so - most think it was something that happens in wars, and especially that kind of brutal war.  Did you want him to do a paraffin test to see if the guy had just fired at them?  If it comes down to yours or theirs - make it theirs every time.

Someone wrote this week that bombing alone would not resolve Iran..... giving the example of the bombing of the Ho Chi Minh Trail .... if only the heads had received approval to sow radioactive waste at the top of it.... if it's a choice between your boys and theirs ... let it be theirs.

A child of two fathers - I am a Humanist first and foremost by nature - a cold killer by training ...... White Wolf/Black Wolf .... and it is a hard struggle.

Please... the DPP (and the Australian government) probably has the strongest of reasons to believe he is not innocent... they're referring it to a court via maximum visibility - i.e. the arrest process (which did not have to be public), initially refusing bail (even before it was applied for), thereby avoiding any question of unlawfully protecting Roberts-Smith.

Again, I have no dog in this fight - I have no opinion on his guilt or innocence.

I'm looking at the case objectively.

There are allegations that he "murdered a disabled Afghan detainee, kicked a handcuffed prisoner off a cliff, ordered rookie soldiers execute others in an initiation practice called 'blooding', and planted items on the alleged victims to cover-up misconduct".

You're happy to ignore those allegations and say that's just "something that happens in wars"?

Trial by media? It sure was a showboat of an operation. Don't worry about any semblance of "protecting" BRS .... there isn't any & there never has been in this 10 year witch hunt.

A national disgrace.

Do you believe that all the accusations against him are false or, do you think there's some truth in the allegations but that's just what happens in wars - soldiers shouldn't be prosecuted for things like that?

There is a problem. The four other men, to be used as witnesses, have been given immunity, for their admitted killings. The government needs a head. The problem I have is that there is no evidence except for those who have admitted killing.

I am not saying it is so, but, the fear of themselves having to face trial, would make it easier for them to apportion blame elsewhere. The old saying "get your licks in first" may apply.

A corporal is not high up the ladder, but a VC winner is. And a corporal VC winner beats four privates, in this hand.

"he who offers testimony first gets the deal". Where have I heard that?

Interesting.

That does seem to be a problem.
