How are you prepping for the failure to come
Mar 21st, 2026 at 4:59pm

Petroleum isn’t first on my list.

Indeed not even on my list. Once society completely collapsed no one is going to care if you can get to work or not.

I need to secure my home first.

That should always be your first priority!

Cash is number two.

Water is number three.

Food of the canned type should be procured.

Garbage bags ( talking from experience) a radio and battery powered backup.

Yes you might think it’s  wonderful you have a diesel generator and loads of diesel stored but you fail to understand your just put a huge target on your family heads. Please refer to my first point.

If poo gets real and unfortunately I have experience.

Your  “ community “ will break and only the strongest and very important you all understand this fact.

Youngest will take whatever you have and whatever you  have they want.

I wonder if a preprogrammed nature thing that the youth will simply walk all over you once the authority are overwhelmed?

I prey Australia never experienced what I have seen.

Don’t believe anything your leaders are saying.

Act now to protect your families

(Sarcasm mode: ON)

Come on, Dave.

Don't be so negative.

That would be so "un-Australian"and "not the Australian way". The pollies keep teling us that.

And, we believe them, don't we? Something like that could never happen here, could it?

People care about each other a lot - especially in times of crisis. Don't they? Oh, wait...

Carry on... (Sarcasm mode: OFF).

Probably won't happen with the current fuel crisis as , even if supplies dropped globally 25%  there would still be enough to prevent societal collapse .

Could well trigger a recession.

The recession we had to have.

I am fairly prepped for what I see as more likely .....a collapse of the banking, electricity or other critical infrastructure due to a cyber attack.

A fortnight of blackouts in big cities would create mayhem...

It is worth looking at the blackouts in NY in -1977.

The looting commenced within 1 hour.
3000 stored stripped.
1500 fires started
And that only lasted 24 hours.

I think big cities would descend into a law of he jungle within a day or two.

The current petrol crisis won't see that.
The cops , woolworhs delivery trucks will get fuel and people will behave.

But put everyone in the dark for a fortnight and urban folk would turn into animals

Better hope it doesn't come to that, eh, aqua?

After all - how are the young going to flourish while the oldies are left to die (like you kept telling us you'd like to see happen when you went on about it 1,000 times in the Coronavirus section over the past few years)?

Despicable stuff.

I  would like there to be a meaningful future for the grandkids.
I find it hard to see what that will be due to the pace of technological change.

As for the old , they had a good run and I am not saddened by their departure.

If my 1 yo mini fox terrier died I would be sad.
If my 12 yo jack russell died I would not be sad but would reflect on all the adventures he had been on.

If you are old and have finished going on adventures and you are just lingering, then why would there be sorrow at such a departure.

If you have finished going on adventures, done all the things you wanted to do , then you should be at peace moving on.

I think old people who have an intense fear of death, probably never went on enough adventures

Buy a sack of rice and 4 bottles of light soy sauce.

Also:
Tinned food can last for 2 years.

I prefer more traditional methods and make my own biltong, cold smoked meats, pickled veggies like my own sauerkraut and sun/air dry fruits.

Quite an adventure to be hunted down by the Boong.

Get him to kill off the nag too. As the Persians used to say, to be slain with one's family is like a feast.

He can wrap you up in bark and cook you in a pit fire.

Miam miam, no?

We are lucky to live where we are. Recent natural disasters were good tests and have shown that our local community can be relied on in crisis times.

I'd agree up until major city areas (e.g. Sydney/Melbourne CBD area). There is certainly a much different culture within a city area where people only care about themselves.

Would not shock me at all if CBDs turn into free-for-alls should anything major happen like long-term blackouts or more drastic supply shortages. Obviously hoping nothing happens at all.

Outside of the city, though, the community can generally be relied upon to remain civil and work together, for the most part.

That very thing we spoke about recently with my son about stacking some cans, rice, pasta etc and we will be okay for awhile, he said, “…and you think it’s going to be safe if it gets to using reserves, rationing, and that others that didn’t do that, could break in and take what you have?”

Well that’s a point, desperate people will do desperate acts….

Nice. I’ve got a dehydrater as well. And we’ve just as a family done passata sauce in beer bottles  (or I would’ve been very annoyed if none had time to help out) …  I kept saying it’s a passata party 🎉  Grin
It was good.

If society breaks down all your prepping will count for nought unless you have guns and plenty of ammunition.
Bows for hunting because you’ll need silence, you’d never know where the ferals are and, you’d better be ready to kill anyone who refuses to stay beyond your boundaries, they may intend to burn you out/steal your supplies/kill you.

Not that I would know but I have a feeling that the best prepped have a very good inventory of supplies that anyone in there  immediate local have.

Why go hunting when you are guaranteed what you need via  raiding?

All that petrol in jerrycans you have been unloading and carrying into your shed?

It will only get worse from here on unless We, the People, take this farm away from the parasites and vultures and demented hangers-on from schoolyard and uni quadrangle politics adherents and all their bleach-blinded by Digital Dementia followers.

Was it all a plan from pre-school to politics - to create mindless morons?

Remember 1986 or so when I said to the boys at work that 'one day we will be looking back on these as The Good Old Days'......

One day you will be saying THESE were the good old days.... when there remained hope of fair play and equal treatment and plain sense in political mismanagement..... there was hope.... once all hope is gone... then you will know.

The benefits of being an Elder Citizen are that you've seen it happening against your will.  Most just give up and hope to lead a quiet life until they pass on - I prefer to remain in the fight....

They Shall Not Pass!

You’d need to hunt for fresh meat.
Really serious preppers are well armed, legally and take target shooting seriously.
Raiding them would be a real risk.
Petrol has very limited shelf life. preppers don’t store it.

Probably a sensible idea.

If there was a global nuclear war, the level of comfort and safety ( the 2 most valuable things to a modern human) would evaporate overnight.

Most people couldn't cope with sleeping rough, being hungry for days on end, living in extreme discomfort both mentally and physically.

If you look at tourists who get lost in the outback or the jungle, they don't survive unless they are rescued.
And there won't be any rescue parties coming for anyone.

The law of the jungle will apply from day 1.

A good way to top yourself when it all gets too much is an essential bit of kit.

You don't want to be stabbed in the belly by a neighbour attacking your house and then spend 5 days waiting for the gangrene of your bowels to finish you off.

Probably the tribals of north Oz will prevail and do well with cattle and camels.  The 4 million guns probably will finish the others.

I forgot that  - don't mention the fuel reserve -
.

' The Morrison government’s fuel security package included the 2020 decision to store $94 million of oil in the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve.' (This is 1 day at 1 million barrels/day consumption)

Albo has offered to send ships to collect the Oz oil if Trump stops the war, hands over 2 subs, cancels the tariff and opens Epstein court cases. Also apologises for being a boof.

I want 250 days supply of fuel stored in giant tank farms on Australian soil.

Can Albo tell us why we don't have that?

Wasn't allowed.

The most important job that Albo has to do is
to keep Australians safe as part of our national security.
He should resign in disgrace has he has failed to do so.
We are still surviving by pure luck and at the whims of world oil markets
and whatever is going inside Trump's head along with mad Mullahs.

Trapping is a potential disaster, a trap run is laying out an observable routine that lends itself to ambush, remember society has broken down and hungry people searching for food are all potential enemies.
Shooting as a hunting tool is a no-no, noise attracts.

Hungry people can be trapped too, of course you have to be in full control of your territory like early detection of any intrusion, e.g. observing birds/animals behavior, etc.

That is old fashion psychological warfare.

BTW, if you live some meat on bones it will attract scavenger birds who become your intrusion early warning.

I'm a Gaean.

I don't believe in Heaven or Afterlife.
When I die. I give back to this world my body to the worms, fungi and the roots of a tree in the ground in a nice mossy forest in New Zealand.

And that's about it basically.
Pretty cool eh?! Wink

I think that's how mother nature intended it.

Unless you throw the chodes a rope with a cautionary tale.

Then you're simply awesome.

The problem for the chodes is that they have adapted to a fake social norm.

The socially accepted norm is that life is about comfort and life is about safety.
That may apply on some utopian planet and by all means move there , but here on planet earth, you can only have a good and content life when you get comfortable with being uncomfortable and when you see fear and anxiety as excitement and adventure.

If you fail to do those things you will become increasingly depressed and deranged because old age is always about discomfort and it is unable to be made safe.

Hence most people are living a massive lie and they will get increasingly caught out.

The chode should be presented with a rope to help him climb, but it is AWAY from the safe , comfortable life of pleasure and entitlement.

Few will accept such a rope.
Most prefer to numb the pain of this reality with drugs alcohol porn sweet foods and netflix.
As such , they are as unconscious as an animal and nature will not favour them .
The lack of population replacement reveals that humans get this at a subconscious level..
It could be that global mayhem and a massive population collapse is what people desire at a subconscious level. They wish for their own annihilation.

Could be the case.

Water, can food, don’t forget your pets requirement.

Two days later  the  Albo government  no crisis.
The next day the Albo government announced we were in a crisis.

Today they have announced it’s officially a emergency..

What odds will you give me by the end of the week Australia is facing a disaster that the Australian people saw coming except labor’s Bowen and Albo?

Medicine , seek your script be filled asap because that is going to run short very quickly and the limited supply we have in Australia will, of course be preference to politicians and the ultra rich.

Buy and stock up now!
If an Australian politicians tells you not worry.

Worry and run and buy double what you need!

He's earned himself a corner at least. Can he goal from it, probably not, beyond taking a swan dive for a penalty shot to compensate for failure.

I'm Gaean
He's Gay'n.

A very wide margin of difference. Not my fault he's a moron who sees unicorns from actual horses, because he had a dildo on his rocking horse's head as a kid.

I made a whole lot of soffritto tonight, put them in small air tight vac sealed bags and in the freezer ready for the bottled tomato passata I made 2 weeks ago.
Good to keep for many months for survival.
Next I make mirepoix.
But tomorrow, as I have many organic quinces, (I’ve made jam earlier this week) I will then make quince jelly.

That’s next on my shopping list to store in pantry  Grin

But food shortage/famine would/could create a desperate enemy within….
I have a night scope, better we take the enemy by surprise rather than they take us by surprise.
I would get Jasin to do the night shift watch ….
Or as they say, keep friends close, and enemies closer, if would-be enemies still have a bit of reasoning above their desperation, I would convince them to join in for a home cooked meal, and then to decide about making better decisions on a full tummy.
We need chores done, so as we were told stories long ago from hubby’s mum on farm, back during war time, people would come to beg for work all day just to have a meal and a little tin shed to sleep in.
I recall seeing all the little pickers huts back in my youth with stories about it.

Would it be the same nowadays as was back then? Or is honesty, integrity and bartering a lost art?

We've got off-grid power from solar and batteries, enough to at least keep the freezer going.  Got a few high‑capacity portable power stations that have their own pannels or can be charged from the rooftop solar, a generator with about a weeks worth of fuel and food and water, including the doggos, for about 3-4 weeks.

Being a family of campers plus having to ensure some wild storms and a week+ without power a few years back, we've had this prep and a plan to cycle out the food etc so it doesn't spoil and go to waste in place for a while now.

I don't feel like we've put any stress on those who need supplies now, which is about as far as my consideration for others is capable of going at the moment.

Any collapse longer than what we can handle that and we'd have to find some way to get back to the farm, which if things look like they're going to go south to that extent, that fuel for the genny will probably be used to head out west rather than stay here.

I'm still changed from COVID in that while I would have helped all my neighbours if needed, after the realisation that even asking people to wear a mask was too much of an inconvience for them at the time and living in QLD, they'd openly mock you if you did yourself, I'm still not in a generous frame of mind to help people I don't know, not anymore.

The masses have proved themselves unworthy.

Should I feel the need to help someone in dire need, I would first need to find out, if at all possible, if they supported the sort of ideology that led to Trump inflicting this on all of us.  If they did, they can suffer the consequences of what they supported.

I will not lose a second of sleep over it, not anymore.

I'm glad I didn't get rid of any of my rifles yet either.

What will help with food rationing? Drinking more water? A little perhaps, but this Caralluma Fimbriata will help a lot!
To reduce hunger pangs/appetite control….it’s what some used during war in different countries for more militant endurance and making food rations last longer.

There is no need for panic if you take intelligent action.

A couple of tin food added to your weekly shop is neither very expensive or going to create a panic buy.

While I appreciate the use of gas  cooking is almost illegal in Australia ( interestingly we can export it through) fill up your bbq gas bottles and camping equipment.

While I wish this new war will end tomorrow I personally prefer to plan a CNN little more long term.

Easter is here. A very long and cold winter awaits.

Our fuel supply is just short of being crippled.

Our electricity supply is anyone’s guess.

Prepare for winter.

Find a axe and firewood.

Albo nor Angus will go without this winter but you might.

A total collapse of the power grid and the internet for , say , months and I would think most Australians would be dead.

We have constructed a society that is just too fragile.

Interesting that Russia and the USA are food and energy self sufficient.

Back to what faced governor Phillip in Sydney Cove.

Worse probably as he had a skilled workforce and he still needed resupply for decades.

I would like to know. Making phone calls. There are some phone booths propped up I’ve noticed.
We still have a landline phone.
Would my kids be we able to call me from a phone booth to my landline?
Note: only reason I have landline is because of adsl2, I have no nbn in my area…. We still left behind a bit….but maybe might be a blessing if I am still contactable by landline phone?

The exchange still needs power.  The closest cell tower near me only has a back generator for about 12 hours.

I've done some work before in the local exchange, albeit about 5 years ago now, around the tail end of COVID, and it only had battery backup back then, so everything is reliant on local power.

The only way you could get around it would be a starlink with local solar, but that requires startlinks base services to remain operational.

Buy your burkas know before the patriarchals for real take over against our decadent and poof-laden west, which, the way the dopey sheilas are undermining and white-anting it - won't last for much longer unless we True People take back the asylums from the rat-bags, and then they'll begin to know reality in the hands of those who don't coddle women in every way.
