David Littleproud says he's 'buggered'

David Littleproud has announced he is stepping down as Nationals leader in a shock announcement, saying he believes it is time to transition to a new leader.

He has confirmed he will stay on as the MP for Maranoa.

Nationals leader David Littleproud says he is "buggered" and that continuing to lead the country party would be "the wrong thing for me to do".

Littleproud says he feels he's represented Australians who live outside of Australia's capital cities well.

"I love the National Party. I grew up in it. I'll bleed it till the day I die. Green and gold. I love it, and it would be wrong for me to say that I'm the right person to continue to lead," Littleproud says.

He's reflected on some of his key policy contributions, including on nuclear energy and net zero.

Nationals will join forces with one nation but their Mo is take out liberals first ... then nationals will take out pauline as can you seriously imagine that absolute nong in a political debate ? No chance against a polished leader like Albo , chalmers and at at least 3 front benchers behind them ... Nats are playing the long game and it will be at least 2 more terms of Labor before they 'may' pull it off ... highly unlikely but throw you dopes a bone to chew on
