Multiple Iranian female soccer players have sought protection in Australia amid chaotic scenes on the Gold Coast that plunged the hotel where the team was staying into lockdown.

Five players are now under the protection of Australian Federal Police.

News.com.au understands that the Department of Home Affairs is now processing the claims after secret talks with the players after Sunday night’s game.

This is a tricky situation. I can understand these women wanting to stay and those that do should be assisted, however there may be some who do feel they need to return to Iran either through loyalty to the regime or fear for their families. They need to each be spoken to separately to see what it is they want, which will mean removing their minders.

Plenty of hypocrisy when it comes to sporting team members who get the red carpet treatment whereas other asylum seekers get shipped off to Nauru!

The team were labelled "traitors" on Iranian state television after a number of players refused to sing the national anthem before their opening match with South Korea at the Women's Asian Cup earlier this month.

Under the Islamic Republic's penal code, corruption or treason can lead to lengthy prison sentences or the death penalty.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the time said the Australian government was willing to provide assistance to other women in the team.

Mr Burke confirmed with ASIO that all the asylum seekers had the necessary security clearance before meeting them and signing their applications for temporary humanitarian visas.

The visas are valid for 12 months and provide a pathway to permanent residency.

These types of visas have previously been granted to Ukrainians, Palestinians and people from Afghanistan.

Mr Burke said he would provide further updates on the asylum seekers on Wednesday.

I hope he checked whether these women know the right word for their sport before letting them stay.

On a more serious note, this is probably bad news for women's sport in Iran. Probably men's sport also. I doubt the regime will be letting any sports teams compete overseas in the near future.

In a post shared by regime-aligned news organisation Tasnim News Agency, the women’s decision to withdraw their asylum claim was framed as a rejection of the West. It was previously alleged that the Australian government had created a “climate of intimidation and coercion” to convince team players and officials to stay.
