Good Samaritan killed in ‘cowardly, shocking’ attack while trying to protect schoolboy

Nicole Precel and Isabel McMillan

March 7, 2026 — 4:49pm

A “hero” who rushed to the aid of 14-year-old schoolboy who was being attacked by a group of teenagers inside Mernda train station was killed in a “savage attack” during evening peak hour, police say.

Homicide squad Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange said police were still investigating the circumstances around the attack, but he said four offenders approached the schoolboy to try to rob him at about six in the evening on Friday.

“That ended up in a serious assault where they started physically assaulting him and pushing him onto the ground.”

He said several bystanders tried to step in to help.

“Our victim was one of those bystanders who stepped in and picked up the 14-year-old and walked him away, walked him outside the train station,” L’Estrange said.

He said the four teens followed them out of the station, then ambushed them, with “fists, kicking and also used weapons”. Police believe there was more than one weapon used and recovered a machete nearby.

“As a result of that, he received some fatal stab wounds.”

Paramedics found the 22-year-old local man unconscious, and despite attempts to revive him, he died at the scene. Police said the victim worked as a security guard, but he was not a public safety officer and was off-duty.

From our partners
L’Estrange called it a tragic situation, where a good Samaritan was trying to do the right thing.

“He intervened, tried to protect this 14-year-old school boy, hasn’t been aggressive, and as a result of his interaction, he’s now lost his life.”

“It’s cowardly, it’s shocking. It’s not something we want to see in our streets.”

He said the four male teens were known to police, but they weren’t out on bail. The new adult time for violent crime laws, which came into effect eight days ago, might mean the offenders face adult sentences and adult courts. Offences including recklessly causing injury and armed robbery are covered by the new laws.

Bobby you have every right to shelter in place.

We have forum members  scared of a mild respiratory virus.

How would they go against 4 youths with machetes.

But remember, as the Victorian judges who live in gated communities always say

" These are just fine young men who made an error of judgement and society needs to embrace them and assist them back onto the correct path in life......welfare, public housing, entitlement, the NDIS....let's pour taxpayers money into these youth .  The gallows is for people like the hateful Pauline if she so much as opens her mouth

It’s a public holiday weekend here in Melbourne (Moomba) and teens were caught by police with machetes.
I’m sad/angry about that 22 year old hero that paid for his life to save a 14 year old.
The guilty machete wielders are murderers.
What’s going to be done about that?????????
These khunts (and no apology for using that word mildly) are known to police, the police are fed up doing their job but they are continually undone.

These murderers are not respecting our laws, our people, our country.
What’s going to be done about that???????

Oh yeah that’s right, spend tax payers money on stupid machete bins!
What a f k n joke. What clowns we have making that decision.
Yeah, sure, those bins will keep those barbarians honest.
Great idea! Fantastic!
The score so far.
Good folk losing. Barbarians winning.

My condolences to that young caring brave man losing his life and to his family and friends  Cry

‘’ Bring back 19th century British justice:’’

I suppose, Bobby, that you know that 19th Century British justice allowed the people to carry weapons, including pistols, if they so desired.
It was not until 1870 that any licencing was introduced and that was only for tax purposes.

Well… not far from where we refuse (couple towns away) a grandfather in Croydon was chopped up badly with machete wielding creeps while he was defending his family.
Family called the police but the response was none can be sent as no units are manned. Or something like that.
Now Mooroolbark police station is only open 3 days a week up to 10 pm.
I always thought it was bigger and better than that?
Then there’s that HUGE new building in Lilydale…. What happened there?
Oooohh kaaay I get it….don’t rely on police or help from them….looks like we will have to defend ourselves in any way possible …. got it  Wink

I remember when I lived in Melbourne. Collins St I think. Cops had surrounded a guy wielding a long sword 🗡️ and calling himself The Highlander.
A mentally ill guy and he was taken into custody I think. I wonder if he was Bobby from way back? Cheesy

The irony now though. If I was living in Melbourne, I would be carrying a good sword under my trenchcoat for protection.

Funny. Melbourne has just been titled #1 most EXCITING CITY IN THE WORLD.
I reckon they paid $1m for its promo spot as these things are PAID FOR. An obvious offset to the $500m they paid for NOT hosting the Olympic Games

Ahh Melbourne. It lost its way the day they got rid of its tram conductors.

I have met a few politicians,    palachez and  steven miles and a few others.
They are empty vessels.
They are not the sort of people who you could rely on in a crisis, to do anything but look after themselves.
It s why you need to practice personal responsibility.

When the poo hits the fan, they are the very opposite of a winston Churchill.

When your life is in danger and you need immediate help the police are only a phone call and 10 kilometres away.
Generally one may not keep anything for the purpose of self defence but there are many things that may be kept for other legitimate purposes.

I think to myself, (taking responsibility for my own safety) I know my place better than any would be intruder. I know hiding spots.
What would be the attraction here? My old 17 year old car?
My new big 85 inch tv is way to big to take and probably the only thing worth taking as we’ve lived here 34 years and furniture is basically mid century. Well apart from toaster and kettle, they get renewed when needed. Oh and my 5 year old Thermomix.
Anyone intruder would be very disappointed in my house  Grin
Unless they like cooking then I have nice pots and cookbooks  Grin
But basically I would hide. Not worth worrying about stuff compared to my life.

I know Frank goes on about Perth and WA but what the h3ll is wrong with Victoria and Victorians these days?

I got a "new" mobile number from Telstra last September and right after I put the SIM card in the phone and turned it on I started getting text messages and then a few calls for the number's previous owner.

Most of the texts were advertising which I've unsubscribed from and blocked but from the remainder (which were specifically for the previous owner) I've learned this much so far:

1. She lives in Victoria.

2. I know her full name and her daughter's name.

3. Child protection and drugs are involved. I had a text from a social worker meant for her in November and, just recently, a text from one of her dropkick and probably drugged friends (might even be the father of her daughter) who suggested she get an early night because - and I quote: "gotta do drug screens Wednesday Thursday Friday 3 days a week court order cozens (should be dozens, I guess?) child protection f wits".

I texted back and told the idiot she wasn't on this number anymore and he (I assume it's a he) replied "Oh sorry I didn't know" but he's still trying to call me (probably still looking for her, 5 times in the past 2 weeks since I told him, I have the number blocked but I can still see when he's tried to call. Edit: Last attempt was Monday afternoon).

4. I know her birthday - March 1st (because her mother sent her a Happy Birthday text that day). Sheesh, she didn't even tell her mother that she'd changed her number.  Roll Eyes

5. I know she has a new number because two of the texts before Christmas were from a medical place in Victoria about some test results, I actually rang them and explained the situation and they said, "ah, she does have a new number, I'll update it on our computer". I didn't ask but they wouldn't have told me what it was, of course.

6. She owes people money (what a surprise). An online store for furniture and appliances with "buy now, pay later" were chasing her for $3,500 as of mid January. I emailed them (I couldn't reply to the text) and explained the situation, I didn't get a reply and I haven't heard from them since.

7. I get a text message today from a debt collector saying her overdue water bill for South East Water (Victoria) has been "escalated" to them (no, I am not going to contact them because they probably won't believe me and they will think I'm 'covering' for her). I'll just ignore and sit back with my bag of popcorn and see how long this goes on for.  Grin

I have lots of numbers on block so far and the number is steadily increasing. lol. Edit: Actually, I've now decided to put all unknown, i.e. numbers not on my phone's contacts, on block for now.

I was kinda hoping that when I got her 2FA login codes for VicRoads in October and Facebook last month I might have received a text message saying "Hi, have you got my code?" but she's obviously too smart to fall for that because I would have replied "Yes, here's your code and, by the way, is this your new number?" which I would have 'helpfully' given to anyone who asked for her from then on. Smiley

Victoria and Victorians? I'd rather go to Queensland (even with aquascoot there).  Grin

Oh, and apparently Telstra and the rest of the telcos are supposed to 'quarantine' numbers that people don't want anymore (or deliberately and quickly get rid of to avoid debt collectors in this case) for at least 6 months before they give the number to someone else.

However, I've heard of cases where numbers have been given to someone else in as little as 2 weeks which is supposed to be illegal. I'm guessing my "new" number was closer to the 2 weeks end of the scale.

And, lots of people with 'recycled' numbers are having this same problem.

I might have a little 'chat' with my nearest Telstra office the next time I'm at Belmont Forum.

You could legitimately have it in the kitchen but having it in the car one day after purchase would probably see you charged for possession of a weapon.

If you’re willing to take a bite on your weak arm, when he fastens onto you, put the strong arm over his neck, then pulling him into you throw the whole weight of your body forward and you should break his necK; the weak arm will need medical attention, but better your arm than your throat.

The attraction could be you, rapists have been known to rape females of any age, from babies to women over 90 years of age.
People who hide can be found.
As it is natural to fear fire, a fire extinguisher may be kept in any room of your house; in the garage or any out building and in/on your motor vehicles.

Take taxi drivers of old. They always had some sort of metal rod or baton in their cabs. The cops all knew. A case of sure, but you'll be charged as well. Better to be charged than dead.
These days though, it's the Musso and currie drivers that assault the passengers

Melbourne & Sydney used to be great and very different to each other.
Then Sydney got AFL and the Mardi Gras, Melbourne got NRL and the Casino and both became One Nation and have turned out crap since then.
