New (huge) TV…
Feb 22nd, 2026 at 1:25pm

It’s a Samsung 85 inch!
Our old 59 inch Samsung plasma died new year day! It was 14.5 years old.
Borrowed daughter’s old 40 inch tv in the meantime. I swear I was going cross eyed it looked so small!
To think in early days big colour tv of 26 inch was the ants pants  Grin

Well I wasn’t going to go for Samsung but this 24 hour special came up for $1390 (down from $2490) so I clinched it!

Dang the 85 inch is huge! Had to rearrange small lounge area and take away wall units, it just seems so bare now!
Well I almost hated the tv as I couldn’t work out how to get into it… had to do some email thing and internet pass code and it gave me 6 minutes! I was down to 2 minutes then it connected!
Miracle!
The remote is very small and very few buttons.
Well next I wanted to connect to prime… oh no here we go again… needing my phone and passcode. I decided to leave it for later.
So now I’m calm I try again, it was a bit easier so got my prime connected and accessible.
I fiddled with all the controls late at night when he’s gone to bed so I learn faster.
To my amazement I can mirror my iPhone to the tv and it needed to get a code to connect.
The mirrored thing never worked for the old Samsung smart tv for me but for others with a Samsung phone it works for them  Roll Eyes
Now I have the mirrored thingy… I went into photos and videos and looked at a few and it’s so good, larger than life!
And today I tested the usb stick with holiday photos on it… at back of tv, plugged straight in and it worked! I never could with that old plasma!
Now all I have to see is if our trusty old dvd and bluray players work. They are Samsung brands. Cross fingers. That’s for another day!
Whew! I almost hated the new tv at first!
Technology isn’t so simple, oh for the days of just plugging a tv in and changing channels.
There is no way on earth hubby could’ve connected the new tv if he were on own.
He thinks I’m so good (alright let him think that  Grin) but I said, I’m more flukey than knowing what to do.
That timer of 6 minutes stressed me  Grin
What I don’t like is. As I need subtitles due to my hearing loss, those subtitles are huge! Can’t shrink them, (I’m deaf, not blind  Roll Eyes) and sub titles almost in the middle of the tv!
I will go into store tomorrow to find out if that can be magically adjusted.

I did all that, and there’s no customisation option.
I’ve taken a screen shot of your instructions and am going in to the good guys tomorrow to see what they can do with the exact same tv
I will let you know how it pans out.

Hmm, it should be there.

'Settings' - the gear icon - is usually on the far left.

Went in to good guys, the tv salesman showed us all the steps (which I had done) and there was no way to make subtitles smaller. All I could do was have white or black background for subtitles. White background was crapper.

So the larger the tv the subtitles go large in ratio with the tv it seems.

All I can do next is phone Samsung tech and see what they say about it.

Hmm, that seems strange.

I thought there would be an option for font size   Undecided

EDIT: I found this: https://www.samsung.com/latin_en/support/tv-audio-video/how-to-use-accessibility...

Says the size can be adjusted in 'Digital Caption Options'.

Thank you for your help. There’s no caption settings, anywhere on this tv with remote.
But good news is, went into Prime to watch this series Fringe, and the sub titles icon appears, and I can change the size…. Well that made me happier  Smiley
In next day or two I will phone Samsung about my particular tv about subtitles adjustment for normal tv viewing.
So you know, it’s 85" U8500F Crystal UHD 4K Smart
TV 2025

Okay the latest development with the subtitle saga.
I have spoken to a lovely lady on phone to Samsung … I gave her remote access to tv so she could see what I see, and says she knows what I mean about big size and almost in middle of tv.
She took me through all settings and it made no difference.
Now with all the details, within next 24-48 hours she we will discuss it with a tech expert to see what could be done.
So that’s the next step.
I said we had a Samsung 59 inch plasma for 14 n half years until it went kaput but the subtitles were good and lower on tv.

Anyhow, I also asked whether there may need to be a technician come here to adjust something within the tv.
Just a thought for now.
So will advise next step of this story later.
Stay tuned (pun intended  Smiley)

Hmm, strange.

Oh well, at least they're willing to help.

It would be nice if they sent out a technician.

Final outcome, (the Samsung consultant in 3 years working there says it’s the first time she’s received a query about the teletext/subtitles, mainly I think because few will have subtitles on, or not have a huge tv yet, to notice the big sizing of text)
So it’s not a Samsung tv issue, it’s to do with whomever is in charge of subtitling for Freeview tv.
At this stage the size can’t be changed.
My next project is to find out who does the subtitling for Freeview tv and make query with them about at least dropping the subtitles down lower on tv.
Back at a later time.

I phoned Melbourne Freeview channels 7, 8, and 10 and they were not much help, all I’m told is they will pass on message about me phoning about size and placement of the closed captions.
Well at least I’ve put it out there. Won’t hold my breath.
All I want is the contact number  of whom is in charge of doing the closed captions for Freeview TV.
