Authorities say they know the attacker's identity but have not revealed their name and gender - earlier, a shelter-in-place alert described the suspect as a "female in a dress with brown hair"

Canadian police say nine people have been killed in a mass shooting at a school and home in the remote rural community of Tumbler Ridge in the western British Columbia province.

Another 25 people were injured, and the suspect's body was also found at the scene.

This is what we know so far about one of the deadliest gun attacks in Canada's history.

When did the attack start?

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said they received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at 13:20 local time on Tuesday (20:20 GMT).

The police responded by deploying officers to the scene, and issuing an active shooter alert for the rural community and a surrounding area.

"Shelter in place, lock your doors and refrain from leaving your home or business at this time" local residents were told.

A "hold and secure" lockdown was activated at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and nearby Tumble Ridge Elementary School.

British Columbia's Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Nina Krieger said police officers arrived at Tumbler Ridge Secondary school "within two minutes" of receiving the call of an active shooting.

She said such a swift response "no doubt" saved lives.

Tumbler Ridge has about 2,400 residents, and its secondary school has 160 students in Grades 7-12.

Here's the latest

Nine people have been killed and dozens wounded after a shooting at a school and home in northeast British Columbia, Canada on Tuesday afternoon.

• Most of the victims were found dead at the school in Tumbler Ridge, while the bodies of two people were found at a home in the township.

• Police know the identity of the alleged shooter, who was also found dead at the school with a self-inflicted injury, but did not give further details and declined to say if they were a child.

• Mass shootings are rare in Canada, a country with much stricter gun laws than the US, and school shootings of this scale are almost unheard of.

Summary

Mass shooting took place at school and another location in British Columbia
Public alert described the shooter as a female in a dress with brown hair
Incident among the most deadly mass casualty events in recent Canadian history

Feb 10 (Reuters) - Ten people including the shooter are dead after an assailant opened fire at a high school in western Canada on Tuesday in one of the country's deadliest mass casualty events in recent history.

The attack brought to Canada the type of mass shooting more common in the neighboring United States, and was carried out by a shooter described as female, police said.

Six people were found dead inside a high school in the town of Tumbler Ridge, in British Columbia, two more people were found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the incident, and another person died on the way to hospital, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

At least two other people were hospitalized with serious or life-threatening wounds, and as many as 25 people were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police did not say how many of the victims may have been minors.
SUSPECTED SHOOTER ALSO FOUND DEAD

A suspected shooter was also found dead from what appeared to be a self‑inflicted injury, police said, adding they did not believe there were any more suspects or ongoing threat to the public.

"It's hard to know what to say on a night like tonight. It's the kind of thing that feels like it happens in other places and not close to home," British Columbia Premier David Eby told reporters.

Police released almost no details about the shooter except to say the person was described as female - potentially an unusual development as mass shootings in North America are almost always carried out by men.

A police active shooter alert said the suspect was described "as female in a dress with brown hair". Police Superintendent Ken Floyd later confirmed at a press conference that the suspect described in the alert was the same person found dead in the school.
